A dalmation, hands-down. They're coach dogs; bred specifially to closely follow people on the move. Can't get much more suiting to jogging than that!

I'd go aussie...though I'm sort of thinking a Husky could run for a year and not be tired so maybe they'd be a good choice? maybe do a poll thingy...

A wirehaired fox terrier - the only problem being that nobody could ever keep up with him/her!

St. Bernard. I know they kind of have a lazy rep, but my best friend's dad had one that he jogged with every day. They jogged probably 8 to 10 miles every day and "Bowser" loved it!

Don't pick a Labrador. I run with my dad and I'm pulling him at first but at the end of a mile he has to slow down for me.

Doesn't mean I don't love it. I go nuts when he grabs the leash. To be honest I think he enjoys having me as an excuse not to go another mile :)

Okay, I will participate. My labs or my shepherd could run that long each and everyday. But the GSD is quicker and lighter on her feet. lol
Although my labs are hunting/field labs, and they are used to lots of exercise.
And would have no problem keeping up.

Another breed that likes to run I think would be a greyhound, although I hear they must be always leashed.

I am just curious to why you are asking??

i just got a boxer puppy on xmas eve, she is almost 9 weeks, took me like 3-4 days to get her used to the leash and have her run with me, but now she will jog with me by my side and not stop, i seriously have to make her stop, i usually jog 1-2 miles a day. i think shes doin great jogging with me. so i would have to say boxer.
ive never seen a dog so energetic.

Dalmatian, hands down! Border Collies are sprinters, they like to do short bursts of speed and then trotting instead of one consistent speed. (I'm sure they could handle going at one speed, but it's not what they're best at and not what they're bred for, like Dals.)

Jack Russells can go forever, and Huskies can too. Greyhounds tend to prefer flat-out running (ie: human could never keep up) to walking and trotting but I bet they could handle it easily, too.)

Definitely NOT a greyhound, they really dont like to run a long way. I know a lot of people think they do but they are built for short burst of speed and not long distances and yes most of them would need to be leashed.

Border collie or dalmation I would go along with.

An English coonhound is built to run all night long.
I think they are beautiful dogs.
They are also protective but usually get along well with other dogs.
I believe they are registered thru the UKC though.

I just love to hear one bay.

I believe the greyhound would enjoy running for an hour, or more. I think they would have no problems at all. And any leash trained dog will pace themselves to their owner.:) ....and still enjoy it.

edit: unless of course the dog is too small or old to keep up. I meant to slow down for the owner, not go faster than the dog could handle.

I'm asking for a friend of mine. He is looking into getting a purebred from a puppy and mostly wants one for a jogging companion(obviously when it matures FROM a puppy lol) He'd also like to get into Obedience and possibly Rally-O trials. We are just narrowing down the different breeds that would suit his jogging style first lol :)

I would still say no to a greyhound, although Julie seems to have had different experiences with them than I have, no greyhound Ive owned or known enjoys running for long periods. Also the rescue I work for do not recommend it either. A lurcher now is a different matter depending on the cross of course, also have two whippet crosses one of which would run forever.

Julie can you tell me more about the greys you've got - love hearing from other grey owners!:)

I still have to say Aussie. What better dog for Obedience than one who is Velcroed to your side 24 hours a day anyway? :D

Aussies were made to run all day long on a ranch anyway, keeping everything in check. Plus, they're in the Top 5 dogs to use for SAR and that takes some endurance.
