So, if it's only that it's unnecessary and not abuse, then why is it even an issue?
Because:

you are putting a dog under a knife for something that is cosmetic. Removing part of the dogs ear and placing it in an unnatural position. And why? because of the small chance that the dog will confront an intruder and that intruder will grab the dogs ears in defence?

I was afraid that this would turn out this way !!! Show dogs have to go by the standard which means docking tail and ears in some breeds . No sense in turning this into an ugly debate .

Yes, which means that it is cosmetic and for looks only.

America is way behind the rest of the world where, for the most part, cropping is banned entirely.

True .... but until the ruling is changed here , those who show have to comply by the rules ..... which means it has to do done to all pups as the breeders do not know which will be of show quality .

But how many show quality puppies of cropped breeds are being bred compared to back yard bred, puppy mill bred and pet bred examples of the same breed?

Very few I can imagine.

Puppy mills and BYB are only out for the money and " pretend " theirs are show quality . Thus they dock , but as ears are done later , that's usually up to the buyers .

i will be glad when hopefully one day it becomes against the law here. I think life is just hard enough without having to suffer even for a minute as an infant. Shouldn't hurt babies. Should be the one time a creature is allowed to be safe and warm and comfortable without injury of any kind. I just don't know why people have to change everything to suit them.

Exactly. It is up to buyer. That person makes the decision to put their dog under the knife and alter their dogs ears and overall appearance for no other purpose besides looks. If that is not superficial I do not know what is.

There was a major revision done by the American Boxer Club to the standard in 2005, it now allows for a natural eared boxer. I am wondering how many other breeds that are traditionally cropped will eventually follow suit.

Wow. Thank you for all the interesting views and oppinions. I have to be honest, there were words I didn't understand, as I am norwegian, but of what i understood, thank you for that. hehe.
So... I think if I had the choise, I would get a boxer with a docked tail. Not because I think it looks good, but to make the chance of injury very very minimal. As this will be my first dog or even pet, I don't want anything to happen to him. People say that when they dock the puppys tails very early after their born, and that it doesn't hurt much for them. So I would rather have him go through that than a much more painfull exprience later on. But as I am getting a puppy in England, unfortunatly it is banned. So no matter what I want I will get an undocked boxer in the end. Which I don't mind. I just hope that his tail wont get injured because I want him to be happppy :D YAY! I can't wait to get a boxer :D they are sooo cute and adorable and cool :)

Again thank you for all the comments and stuff. Just write more if you like :D

PS: What is an e-collar?

It can be one of two things. Where did you here about them? It can be either an electric collar (I do not recommend them, it causes your dog unnecessary pain in most cases) or an Elizabethan collar used on a dog to prevent him from licking and biting at stitches from surgery.

Glad to hear that you will not be removing any of the puppies body parts. Boxers look so much nicer natural as they are supposed to be.

I never owned a pure breed, so this is why maybe I just don't get all the "beauty" stuff. I have 2 dogs took from the street. VERY mixed breed if I might say. And saved one who didn't even have fur months ago. And I loved him like crazy and still do. My reward now is that the "kid" is absolutely lovely now after 4-5 months. A superb dog. This doesn't make me love him more than I did when I took him from the streets with internal and external parasites and almost no fur. I love doggies for what they are. They love me for my soul and not for being pretty or not. Should I have a boxer or another breed that is usually docked and I would be able to chose if they are left "natural" or not, I'd go with natural all the time.

I would just like to say that the only reason I would prefer a docked boxer tail is because I've heard and read so many horible storys about what has happened to undocked boxer tails. Don't get me wrong. I looove their tails :)
