Call me crazy or whatever but Im am so frightened of pool drains. Especially those huge square grate ones at the bottom of diving pools. They look like they'll suck you in if you get close enough. Im a swimmer. I love swimming but I stay as far away from pool drains as much as possible, big or small, they all scare me. I avoid swimming over them. If there's a drain in my lap lane they I'll swim in a different one. Crazy I know. Anyone else have this phobia?

I do. I'm scared of anything like that. My biggest fear is being stuck suspended in space with no walls, ceiling, floor, nothing, and the feeling of weightlessness and the look of having 'nothing' but more water around doesn't help.

I'm not afraid of swimming, I love swimming, but something about the drains just triggers a "get away" response.

That and I've heard stories about girls getting their hair stuck in the drains and drowning. I'm not a girl nor do I have hair long enough for it to be an issue but still, maybe...a leg hair or something.....

Edit: By the way this is just swimming underwater near them. If I'm just swimming over them then they don't bother me but if I'm just chilling out on the bottom of the pool (ya know, having a tea party or lounging about) then they get to me.

Same here. I was at a hotel pool and next to the hotel pool was the jacuzi and linked to the jacuzi from the pool was a undergound pipe that piped the warm water into the jacuzi and vise versa. So there's this whole in the wall of the pool underwater, and if you stuck your hand on it the suction was so great that it would suck your hand in. The hole was probably the size of a half dollar so it wouldnt be able to suck an adults hand in, maybe a childs or babies, but still.. the suction was so great that it startled you.

I am terrified of those things. I saw an episode of Rescue 911 once where a girl got her hair caught in one and drowned. That sparked my phobia.

Beware the drains! I read a story in my book (Chicken Soup for the Preteen Soul) and it has a girl and both her sisters drowned because of going swimming without an adult at a town pool and their feet both got stuck in the drain because they were racing underwater... It took almost an hour to get them both out.. BEWARE! lol almost everybody is scared of pool drains :) I also have another weird phobia that involves a pool... have you ever gone swimming in your pool (or somebody else's pool, for that matter), and looked in the shady part on the pool and think a shark is going to come and eat you up, leaving the pool a bloody mess?

When I was a little girl, many, many years ago. We were required to always wear swimming caps. Ugly, I hated it...but, maybe, they were pretty smart...no ones hair could get caught in the drain. And trust me...owning a pool, you would not believe the hair that gets trapped in the filter. It is so disgusting.

Swimming pools? What are those? Around here all we have is the pit which I don't swim in any way. But yep I don't like the drain either but do tend to stand on them everynow and then.

I have a scary story about a pool drain but I won't tell it.

Im afraid of elevators and escalators lol. I will always choose stairs and if there isn't any I will just wait for who ever is riding the elevator or escalator to come back.
The reason im afraid
Elevators- Im afraid of getting stuck in them not such a bad thing to most but im also afraid of small spaces. Im also afraid of the cable breaking and falling stories and all that good stuff and then dieing. But its mainly just getting stuck.

Escalators- When i was little my grandma told me not to wait until the last minute to step off. When I asked why she told me because my toes would get caught and be cut off. Then i saw a woman at the mall once when I was little who long skirt got caught in the escalator. I panicked and have never gotten on one sense.

And just for kicks

Small Spaces- Because when I was about 5 a friends older brother told me to hide in the trunk (like a treasure chest). Im not sure why but I did it and he locked me in I was stuck in there for made 15 minutes but it felt like hours and I was kicking and screaming. Ever sense i have been afraid of small spaces.

Sounds like fairly irrational fears to me.

For one you know you can't get stuck in an escalator. That and they have emergency shut off buttons at both ends of them if a dress or some such should happen to get stuck.

Elevators- Im afraid of getting stuck in them not such a bad thing to most but im also afraid of small spaces. Im also afraid of the cable breaking and falling stories and all that good stuff and then dieing. But its mainly just getting stuck.
It's not too bad. I was stuck in one for 2 hours once. My sister and I were roaming the hotel when I was 11 (she was 15) and we had the brilliant idea to jump as the elevator went down. Well this apparently jarred something and the elevator just stopped. After the initial panic it wasn't too bad.

And I still jump when elevators go down :p
So much fun.

But to each their own. My sister and mom are claustrophobic and I find it hard to believe you could be scared of being in a tiny place. I like being in small places. Boxes, elevators, cars, trunks, etc. Always have, probably always will.

Its the fear of being stuck in that tiny space. I tend to shake and stuff like that. But yeah they are irrational I even say its stupid.
