At the shelter there is a Malamute. It's an owner surrender and said they got him from a breeder, he is now 8 yrs old. He is a really big guy, far bigger then malamute standerds. He was also VERY VERY dirty! He reeked of feces and urine and many other foul odors mixed in. He so wanted to be petted, but to do so without gloves meant hands reeking also.

We gave him a bath and scrubbed with shampoo and washed it off three times. He was a very good boy and very tolerant. Even using and scrubbing shampoo into his fur three times he was a still a bit smelly after. He was such a good boy the entire time. Before the bath he was brown, black/grey, and some creamish/brownish white. After the bath he was white, black/grey, and a few small patches of creme white.

We used the industrial dryers on the dog which are very loud, his fur was so tangled we had to pull a little and I know it must've not been to comfortable for him, and we spent more then two hours in a hot room with a small fan and through it all he was a sweetie! He just layed his head in your lap and was content to have human contact. Food was a bonus, but human contact was the best for him.

The owners of this dog left him in the back yard alone tied up for 20 hours a day. No joke! He only had people with him for 4 hours each day according to them. His toe nails where so long it made his toes bend to the side so he could walk. His dew claws where curled in a circle. This dog was a mess. Yet still he loved people and had faith in them. He had enough faith that we where going to take care of him to lay his head in our laps (not simultaniously though lol) and sleep. He was a very good boy and it's sad to think these people didn't give a crap enough to be with him or bath him.

Oh did I mention he was very very obese. He was WAY too overweight. He was in a horrible state.

What disgusting owners. It's so hard to relate to some people, isn't it. Thank god the dog is now in good hands, poor guy.

BB, that dog is so lucky to have people like you waiting and available to help him! I'm sure he felt so much better after all of it.

dang..that is so sad. I hope he gets someone decent for his remaining years. Wish they would have decided to give him up about 8 years ago!!!!! What a dirty rotten shame.

The problem is he isn't. He won't be safe until he finds a home. Our shelter is still a kill shelter though we try desperatly to get the animals out it doesn't always happen :(

The poor dog... Malamutes are such sweet dogs. I had a friend who had a Malamute. I sure hope he gets adopted soon!
They are! They are pack animals and it's such a shame when someone doesn't treat them like family!

He sure seemed like he did. :) I felt bad leaving him in the kennel again because when we got him out he wouldn't even get up or look at us, but when we put him back in he stood there watching us leave :( I gave him some extra chicken chews though ;) Not that he really needs more weight lol

I know. It would make it so much easier for him to get adopted and he wouldn't have had to gone through a life of lonliness if they just would've given him up when he was younger.

If people pass him over and his time draws near, you could try contacting some rescue groups. A lot of them are suckers for older dogs with hard luck stories! Just do a google search for "Malamute" or "Sled dog" rescues. Husky rescues sometimes take in mals too.

Just a thought...;)

Sounds like he's doing better in your guys's care. I'll keep my fingers crossed and we all hope that he gets an excellent home! Please keep us updated!

Oh, and as a side notw ~ its a good thing you live quite a ways away from me. Otherwise, I think I would've filled out applications on several dogs you've posted about LOL ;)

He is in the front kennels (there are 4 kennels you see right as you walk in) so I'm hoping that will give him a bit of a leg up, but I was going to ask a lady there that works with a bunch of different rescues trying to get dogs out to call a rescue about him (I was thinking Washington Alaskan Malamute Adoption League). She's told me before if I ever see a special dog here that needs to find a great home to get in touch with her and ask to see what she can do. Hopefully between people looking at him at the shelter and trying to get a rescue to take him he'll be able to find a loving home. He really is a great dog and I don't understand how anyone could let him get so bad! He let us do whatever we wanted to him (including playing with his feet to cut the nails) so his owners have no excuse about letting him get so bad.

Ok sorry for that little vent lol

lol :D Too bad you live so far then lol If I could've I would've adopted sooo many of the dogs! I get a discount too ;) lol

Thanks :) I'm hoping someone will see what a sweet dog he is and just fall in love with him. I bet after they see him in a visitation room they will adopt him! I'm sure he would do good with kids too.
