So apparently Summer will eat premade raw patties, but still refuses things like chicken wings, etc that she has to work at. The premade raw is expensive though. Is there an easier way to make raw that she will actually eat?

Well, you could try feeding raw ground meat. If it's supermarket meat, then you'd have to add an appropriate amount of calcium. Plus if she gets picky, you could barely cook the food, or cook it less and less until she's on raw (that's what I did when I transitioned Bailey). If you can get raw w/ground bones, like from a co-op, that would work, too. Obviously, you wouldn't cook anything with bone.

It's a bummer that she doesn't like RMBs so far, though. That's Bailey's favorite part! Have you tried a variety of RMBs? Maybe duck or pork necks would work? Or lamb breast (ribs), those are pretty small. (Hopefully someone like Dekka will chime in as to what smaller dogs eat for RMBs if I'm mistaken.) I'm sure Mia would be happy to eat whatever Summer rejects. ;)

It took Bailey a bit to get the hang of it. I had to hold the duck necks for him at first, lol.

You might get a grinder and just make your own patties. Chuck in the wings/backs/whatever, grind it up, form and freeze.

Kaiden took a while to like whole raw things. I just let him get hungry every now and then, mean mom that I am.

Oh I still have to HOLD the patties.:rofl1: She really is hopeless. Then again papillons are notorious for being one of the pickiest breeds when it comes to food.

Is there a specific type of grinder you need to get in order to grind bones?

I would avoid grinding bone up - chewing bone is how they clean their teeth.

You may not be comfortable with this approach, but the general idea is, "They'll eat when they're hungry." Make sure she doesn't eat any snacks or table scraps - JUST the raw. Feed her once a day. If she isn't eating, take it away and try the next day. She will NOT let herself starve, trust me!

Good luck!

I can tell you the 'they will eat when they are hungry' might keep a dog alive.. but if they don't like the food they will be very very thin!

Ground raw is better than no raw. I am sure Laur is well aware of the teeth cleaning benefits of whole pieces.. but ground raw is better than kibble.

The problem with papillons is when it comes to food, they're way pickier than any other breed I've met. I don't think they would starve themselves, but my friend tried switching hers over to raw and the dog dropped over a lb (which is a lot for a dog this small) because she would refuse the food. All of my past dogs would eat whatever you put in front of them, but the paps are just not like that. And they're already hard to keep weight on as it is. I also worry about hypoglycemia issues with small dogs skipping too many meals.

But yeah I wanted to do raw partially for the dental benefit but I figure ground raw would still be a step up from kibble feeding.

Mine are fed ground and if you still give chewies and stuff it's 100x better than kibble or canned for the teeth still.

I'd never recommend doing the tough love approach with any dog under 10lbs. It's too risky with the hypoglycemia issue.

What i've found Laur is that lots of picky dogs are texture oriented. My chihuahua nephew stopped eating raw after a dental where they "mistakingly" pulled the tooth behind the canine on the top on both sides because the raw (whole or ground and thawed) felt different then to him. So we figured out that he liked it when it was cut into chunks or partially frozen and then let stand to room temperature. He also accepted raw when we rolled the patty into small meatballs for him and stuck in the freezer for a few minutes just to harden up a bit.

In the end all i can say is thank god i have Pugs!

Muffin won't chew bones... He'll strip the meat off & then leave it. I recently found a place that sells ground raw... So bones included. The only reason I found this place was bc a guy in one of my training classes told me about it.

So before buying a grinder(the ones that can handle bones tend to be expensive), try calling a few training places and just ask them if they know of anywhere that sells it.

I'm so happy I found this place.... it's WAYYYY better(and in my case cheaper) than trying to grind things myself.

Lurkers, DO NOT LISTEN TO THIS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Papillons are just too tiny to use this approach. You are asking for long term organ damage.
Laur, what worked with Ben was getting a pan really really hot and searing the wing for like 2 seconds on each side. That got him started. Once he realised that it was actually fun, he dived right in.

There ARE dogs out there who will starve themselves for no good reason other than they really do not like the food they are being fed. Most won't, but that does not by all means guarantee that no dog will.

Auggie likes me to hold his raw for him... he'll eat RMBs and stuff, he just really likes me to hold them. He's a booger. =P If I drop it he'll stare sadly at me and just pick at the food on the ground, but if I'm holding it he'll eat and chew and rip and tear with gusto.

Ugh well I held off on buying a grinder or anything just to see if summer would stay on the raw and several days in she started refusing again. I can force feed some down her throat but not a full meal and it's obvious she thinks it's icky.

Mia is the complete opposite and goes crazy when she sees that I'm giving her raw. She whines and cries and won't leave it alone while it's thawing lol. And after she eats she runs around the house like a wild girl and tears the snot out of her toys lol.

I may try searing it next...

Maybe raw is just never going to work for Summer.

I know that we all talk up the benefits of raw all of the time, but I really think homecooked is great for dogs too. From what I've read, you really don't lose too many nutrients if you cook food lightly (and you can always cook it less and less over time, as I suggested earlier :)).

Oh my Goodness Laur I feel your pain I really do.. Yorkies are SO picky too.. Keely wont touch anything raw except for steak.. And she isnt living off steak!

It took me a full year to find a kibble she would eat without mixing canned food in with it.

And the whole "She'll eat when she is hungry" Is a Bad idea for small dogs proned to hypoglycemia.

You know, in addition to the very light searing.......you might try just a dash of something that smells good. A dash of garlic, or some other odoriferous thing she prefers to eat.

I did see Victoria Stillwell do this with a little Yorkie who would not eat his food (it wasn't raw, it was some sort of canned) she added the smallest teeny tiny touch of garlic and then heated it up a bit. That dog gobbled it up to the last lick of the empty bowl, LOL

Keep in mind the NOSE is more powerful of an attraction device for dogs than any other sense they have..........play to that, and use what you know about her ;) Maybe given time, you can slowly wean her to straight raw with no added work to it like Mia :)

Okay new news.

I tried searing, no go. Tried mixing in cheese and searing and mashing up, no go.

Now dekka told me to try some plain ground beef and I seared one side of that and she gobbled it all up really quickly. So.... now what? lol

Try ground chicken etc (people stuff) if she likes that then its something thats added to the patties she doesn't like.

You could then try slowly mixing in thawed patties to the ground meat.

Or you could make your own patties.
