OK, I am taking a big leap by doing this:) I am going to open up a Doggy Day Care with a friend. I will stay at the boarding facility I am overseeing until I'm on stable ground - financially.

Now this is where it gets fun, I thought I would ask everyone here what they think of my ideas, add some ideas or tell me if some of my ideas are silly.

Doggy Day Care will include other services such as

-Limited dog grooming (I am not a trained professional groomer)-mainly specializing in large breed dogs...this will hopefully keep the other groomers in the area happy as they perfer small breed dogs.

As for grooming I have not taken any courses, but, I have been going in on Saturdays with my Sister to get tips/training from her...she is a National Certified Master Groomer. I'm sure I can get whatever training I require. My Sister actually hired a girl right out of grooming school and was very dissappointed at the lack of training she received. We are also going to the Grooming expo this fall where I should be able to attend a few select courses etc. I am not going to advertise as an all breed groomer. How could I let that be known in advertising...that will be difficult.

Now my friend on the other hand keeps her Collies in Show trim and has been grooming/showing for a few years. She also keeps a local kennel of show collies in show shape. She has also groomed a few Newf's for show. She is also coming in on Saturdays to learn more from my Sister...my Sister is going to be busy..:) She has retrained a few new groomers fresh out of school, and she has another groomer coming down from another city to learn to groom...this lady has been grooming for a few years, she just wants to learn some different styles.

-Day Care which will involve people leaving their dogs with us for the day. We will be able to supervise, play, and take for walks. This will be great for the person who works and leaves their dogs all day. We will also provide supervised (of course) interactions, socialization etc. My experince is working at/over seeing a boarding facility for the past few years, working at a grooming shop where my Sister also had a few dogs dropped off to hang out for socialization. I also worked at a Vet clinic for a few years, and attended courses in Dog Aggression, obedience - but I have no certificates. I do think certificates on the wall would be good...although my Sister has her many certificates including her National Certified Master Groomer on the wall...no one ever notices:)

-We may have another bathtub set up for customers to rent if they want to bath their own dogs. For large dogs my brother will make me a sturdy set of stairs with rubber matting so the dog has a great grip...my Sister has had her homemade stairs for many years...still solid and great as ever.

-We will sell dog/cat food, Shampoo's, Treats, Bones etc. We may ever sell such things as stainless steel dishes, leashes, collars etc. The company I currently deal with has all these products available for me to distribute.

-Art Work, both my friend and I are Artistic, I have sold many paintings of pets in my past. I also did some artwork for the local agility club by hand painting "their" dog on the arm of their jacket with fabric paint. So, we are thinking of offering pet portraits, paintings of the owners pet on just about anything - Flower Pots, Wooden light fixtures, T-Shirts, just about any surface we can and will paint on. I am also going to get back into pottery and get set up with kilm and Wheel..so, we will have doggy art available - breed specific or pet specific. Maybe a dish set with your own pet on it.;)

- Dog walking service for shut in's etc.

- There will be no overnights. In extreme circumstances I will bring a dog home and leave in our kennel over night. We are getting our home kennel a kennel license.

The courses we plan on taking in the next couple of months is: Dog first aid, Acupressure, dog massage, Animal Care Technician. I don't know what else we could offer. We're also thinking of having an area set up with a table and coffee/tea/hot chocolate where owners can sit and watch their pups...and we can have weekly pow wows when the Customer's want. We could discuss their dog and give ideas or help (after we get more training). We will also have weekly progress reports where will will keep the owner up on their dogs behavior etc.
If anyone can add any ideas I would really appreciate it. Also help suggesting names of the esthablishment. I'm leaning towards a name that begins with the letter "A" this way I'll be top of the list in the yellow pages. Most people when looking go down through the list. No name with the word Pet in it...when you translate Pet to french then back to english it comes up as the word "Fart"...I don't want Fart in my company name. haha

Sounds like you've got a great idea in the works! I'd go...

As far as names go that can double-translate I'll have to ask my friend who speaks French. "Allure DayCare" maybe?

That sounds cool - a "one stop shop" full-service doggy day hotel where you can leave your dog for the day, have it looked after, played with, socialised, groomed - pthhhhhhrt :), have a picture made!

I think that a main 'selling point' is that your service is much more than just a day drop-off, as it sounds like you'll move into help with behaviour/socialisation as well - which could help new/busy owners, dogs with problems etc...

You might have a niche with "big bad hairday" grooming if the other groomers in the area prefer smaller dogs, lol!

Other ideas:
(Good!) photos as well as the art - dog+owner (owner can't take picture of self+dog!)
(Good/quality!) food sale/ delivery
Good pet healthcare insurance products...

Something to think about:
Starting up a business like this you might want to be sure you're covered with the necessary disclaimers/paperwork and insurance - worst case what could happen legally if dogs in your care dogs lost, had a fight etc. Obviously a hopefully-never-happens worst case, but best be prepared.

I think the idea of a rentable 'dog wash' is great - some pet friednly camp grounds here have them - a large tub, hot water+showerhead etc... esp if it could accomodate a large dog, then you could sell related grooming products, shedders, brushes etc and give grooming advice.

you'd presumably limit the intake and have facilities if dogs didn't get on?

Just some thoughts - hope they might help....

(Bit far for me to visit though)

Names... I guess the problem you're going to have is with so much on offer you'll have to have a number of names for the different services, or IMO one catch-all, memorable, fun name with a punchy tagline.

Just some ideas:

Pooches parlour / paradise
Doggy daycare and more
Pawfect dog care
Pawfection
The paw works
Hound dog ranch
Dog gone days
Awayday Dogs
Central Bark
Woof works
Wagging tails

Oh and just for fun, altavista web translation of dog grooming, English to French:
= toilettage de chien  sounds like something you might step in!!

Thank you bonster. You gave me some great ideas. I really appreciate it. I love the names you came up with.

We are going to go through all the proper channels, we need to have an inspection done on the facility to make sure it is a proper area. I think it's already zoned. For insurance, we will definately be looking into that. We would also have cards for owners to sign releasing us from some things that may occur. I have cards like this at the boarding kennel I work at...basically releases us from things that are beyond our control...and very detailed on the back. We also have a stipulation on the cards that if we feel the dog requires medical attention and we cannot contact the owner we can make the decision to take the dog.

It's quite exciting, I hope we don't fall flat on our face.

Thank you zoom for the offer for double translation. I live in a bilingual province...so, I want to be extra careful of how words translate...:) There are way too many Fart Groomers in my area! haha

If I were you, I would go visit other doggy daycares and ask questions.
I used to work in one and please believe me that it is quite stressful! The owner didn't make much money what with paying rent, utilities etc, and then add employees....well, she opened another facility and wound up closing down the original one because it wasn't profitable. You could take care of all of your fur clients by yourself to save money but you will be exhausted! It's not as fun or easy as you may imagine.
I'd also like to add that unless you are renting a building with a lot of space (rooms), your grooming dogs are going to be quite distracted by all of the noise and activity. You will also need a building with a fenced in area for the dogs to go potty in.
My former boss would take as many as 14 dogs a day with usually one person supervising them. You have to watch them every second because there will always be an instigator in the pack somewhere.
I wish you good luck with your new venture but please do a lot of reasearch before you invest any money in this. I have a friend who just opened one and she isn't making a profit and she is pooped!

thewhitewitchone,
Thank you for reply. I'm sorry your boss & friend failed at this business. As for myself my Sister and a few of my friends with dog related businesses are doing very well. My Sister hired 3 more groomers as her customer base is growing and growing. She does VERY well.

We have done our research by doing a market research in our area....we do not have a doggy day care in our City...zippo. We also have a few clients already even before we get our door open. We found a lovely location to set up and we checked zoning laws.

The friend I am opening with has completed a course on small business...I am on friendly terms with most of the local Vets, and they will refer clients to me as well.

As for Stress, I am very familiar with stress...I work at a dog kennel where we board up to 50 dogs...plus the owner has 9 Newfoundlands....she also whelps her own Newf litters and whelps those of her friends...so on top of the kennel work, walking the dogs, playing with them, grooming, cleaning, feeding, washing dishes, cleaning bedding, hosing runs, mopping entire kennel daily, cleaning rubber mats...taking care of puppies...sometimes having to bottle feed as the breeder worries they may not be getting enough milk....cleaning whelping areas - throughly....once we had 2 litters in the whelping room at one time. I could go on and on about every thing I do at work...I'm quite used to hard work.

I have many years experience with dogs and many years of working directly with dogs. I have learned to multi task, and I am very very good at reading dogs body language...something I have been studying for many years. I have had multiple dogs out to play together and at my Sister's shop we usually always let a few dogs play around the shop while we work...there are also a few clients of hers that bring their dogs in and leave them for the day for socialization...they usually have some horrible behaviors that we work with.

My friend also is head of the local agility club and does temperment tests...so she too is very well studied in dog behavior...just no certificates to show for it.:) She competes in obedience trials, usually volunteers as an usher for the dog shows, has shown in conformation. Yes, we have lots of combined experience...

So, I have no worries in that dept. we are both multi tasked. We have studied this for quite some time. Plus, we are not relying totally on doggy day care, we are going to be grooming, selling artwork/pottery, dog food and retail supplies. I would never put all my eggs in one basket.

Sounds like you have a plan and you will probably do great.
My former boss is still in business and is also a trainer. Not sure how well her new location is doing as I haven't spoken with her since I was "let go" when our location closed.
I used to work in a kennel also that cared for as many as 115 dogs at a time during "peak" season so I know about that hard work thing too!
When are you planning on opening your business? Keep us posted on how it goes. Wish you the best!

We are in Southern California, and my husband and actually toyed with this idea ourselves. I have managed and started up a veterinary practice with the veterinarian so I know what it takes to do. I hope you do well. It can be a huge undertaking, but it will probably be very rewarding for you.

We thought it if we did a doggy daycare (which we have since decided not to for a couple of family reasons) that it would be great to have a webcam in a few locations so people at work could watch their pups from time to time.

We also thought there should be a 'time out' area for older dogs who might get tired out, or some that may get over excited or be having a bad day.

Just a couple things we considered. I hope this works out for you. You must be SO excited!

Thanks every one:) I really appreciate your input. An area for older dogs is a great idea.

We are tentatively planning on opening in March. We were thinking of a webcam so people can see what their dogs are doing throughout the day...that will probably come later when we are set up. Great idea;)
