Im looking for a medium/large guard dog who would have plenty of exercise along with a large garden. I would prefer it if the dog was ok with strangers and other dogs but was able to defend the family/house if and when called upon. I was wondering what you guys/girls would suggest.

Cheers

Without even having to think twice, a Boxer. Sounds like it would meet all your requirements and it would keep you well entertained at the same time!!! Gotta love those mugs!

A doberman. But only if your responcible with him. Is he going to be outside all the time? Are you going to properly socialize him? Most great guard dogs are that way just for their looks.

Keep in mind that almost all dogs will defend their human if they sense danger. There are many breeds out there that meet your criteria. I would recommend you go to a local book store and find an illustrated breed book, pull up a chair, drink a coffee and thumb through it. Something will catch your eye that meets your needs. My suggestion is that you look in the working group first and the herding group has some good ones too ;)

pitbulls aren't meant to be human aggressive. I think my pit mix would rather help the burglar carry the tv to his truck than attack (LOL). A guard dog doesn't really even need to be mean. Most people are afraid of our pit mix just because of his looks. Most people feed into the hype about pitbulls and rotts and dobermans being mean and killer dogs and will stay away from a house that has one of those breeds.

I have a neopolitan/pitbull mix.

I do know that neopolitan mastiffs are very good guard dogs for the house and are very good family members. They love their families and will protect them.

I found this description of their temperament:

Temperament
The Neapolitan Mastiff is steady and loyal to his owner, not aggressive or apt to bite without reason. As a protector of his property and owners, he is always watchful and does not relish intrusion by strangers into his personal space. His attitude is calm yet wary. In the show ring he is majestic and powerful, but not showy.

You can read more on this website:

I have a mastiff mix. He's a 5 month old puppy and mixed with wolfhound though LOL!! Here are some pictures. Mastiffs are great dogs, but VERY lazy!

Any dog can protect its family.. The best guard dog I've ever known was a medium-sized mixed breed from a shelter. She never had any protection training, but she was the perfect guardian. She never started fights, only finished them, and she was "just" a little mixed breed from the pound. :)

If you do want a puppy from a breeder, though, I would second Showpug's suggestion about looking into the wokring group first for potential breeds.. Although, I wouldn't recommend many herding breeds - Often times, herders can be "too much dog" for even good dog owners.
