I'm not really sure where to post this because I don't know if it's medical or psychological.

Zoe is 3 1/2 year old very healthy lab/border collie mix. I work from home, so am around her most of the time. Since we've had her at 4 months, she's been house trained, and I often leave during the day for a few hours at a time, no problem.

All of a sudden, she's started peeing when I leave. Last week, I noticed she had peed on her bed, and just thought maybe it had been a while since she went out (though I take her out about every 3-4 hours routinely). I chalked it up to an accident.

Today, I took her out three times. The last walk was at 2:30 for half an hour- she did pee while on the walk. Then I came in and did some work. At 5:00 I ran out to do some errands- when I left she was laying on the futon next to my desk. Came back 20 minutes later and she had peed- a LOT on the futon! She also acted overly excited to see me like I'd been gone for days. I didn't chastise her because I just didn't know what to think, and fear it might be medical.

What the heck? She has tons of energy, doesn't seem sick in any way, when she does pee outside doesn't seem to have any problems doing so.

Is she upset that I leave? Why would this come on now when this has been "normal" for us for over 3 years?

I'm stumped- help!!

I would make sure she doesn't have a bladder infection which could be causing this.

I agree....vet check. When she pees outside, does she pee a lot or is it just a tad? Does she have to go out very often? It could be UTI, like Barb said. It could also be spay incontinence, although she's pretty young, I think for that. Maybe not. Toker has been leaking...not purposely peeing. So, I took her to the vet, suspecting the spay incontinence. Probably that is what it is, so we're starting her on estrogen and will see if that works. She doesn't have signs of an infection. When she goes purposely outside, she really puts out a lot. And she doesn't have to go often. She just leaks a little here and there. Hope you figure it out. But yeah....always rule out medical reasons first before the bigger job of behavioral remedies. Good luck.

Like others said a vet check is in order.

If everything checks out, you may be looking at Separation Anxiety and may want to try and crate or otherwise contain her and see if this helps.

That is a big change all of a sudden and some kind of warning maybe. Especially peeing in her bed, that is odd. So I agree, you really do need a vet check. He will test for a bladder infection.

Jack has some separation anxiety. When we are gone she will sit and shake. Poor baby, I always feel guilty leaving. But she is getting better. She loves the couch, I used to put them in the back room but now I just leave them to roam around the house and Jack just stays on HER couch, lol.

I know some vets will give anxiety medication to a dog that has really bad separation anxiety.

Also, make sure she is checked for intestinal parasites as well - often, a digestive upset can trigger a bladder upset, so you have to check both areas. (For example, it's common for dogs - and people - with IBS to have urinary issues, such as frequent urination). Good luck!

From your description (peeing in bed), I think incontinence. This can be fixed with meds. I have a dog with this problem and her meds keep her controlled. She is on Premarian.

Peeing on bed is not a symptom of seperation anxiety. There would be many other noticable symptoms if SA were the problem. A UTI is also a posibility but I lean towards incontinence.
