So I was driving around this afternoon, scoping out a potential new walking grounds. I was driving up the street when to my shock and surprise, just up the road, right in the middle, a chihuahua and her pup were LAYING DOWN licking themselves. I saw a 10 year old kid messing with his bike, but he seemed to not notice or care about the dogs so I stopped and proceeded to catch the pup. The mom was barking at me which drew the kid's attention. He just stared at me so I put my hand down (still in the middle of the road) and tried to lure her over too. I start walking to my car, since there aren't any collars or tags or anything on these dogs, so I figure I'll take some pictures and put up some signs. I was less than a mile from my house. The kid is still staring at me so I figure I'll ask : "These your dogs?"
"Yeah...I guess they got out. Bad Roxy." sigh. So I take them over to him and say "Hey, take care of them, don't want them to get squished". He shrugged his shoulders and went in the house.

WHAT THE HECK!? He WATCHED me pick up the dogs, WATCHED me walk to my car and said NOTHING. He SAW the dogs out...why didn't HE try to catch them?! I don't understand, I really don't. I should have asked him to get his mother or something, just to make sure they were his. Even if they were, they didn't look super healthy. Their coats were dull and they just didn't seem all that interested in what was going on. Not like I have extra room until I found them homes, but really, I keep second guessing the whole situation. Oh well, at least they weren't run over today.

If I was a young kid and some stranger was taking my dogs, I might be confused and not want to say anything for fear or what that person might do.

I would maybe stop over and explain to the parents what happened, and tell them their son was kind enough to take them back inside.

The fact that the kid was right there when the dogs were laying in the road probably tells the story. No one really cared. And why wasn't there a parent running out to see what was going on when a stranger stopped her car and got out and was talking to her kid who was alone in the yard???

That was more or less my point. I get the kid not knowing what was going on, maybe being shy, but he had a total look of disinterest. The dogs were in the MIDDLE of a fairly busy looking street, and he didn't so much as raise a "HEY, get BACK here!" Nothing. I observed the situation BEFORE I stopped and got out of my car. I just figured "Hey, I'll go see if they have tags (nope, not even a collar) , and see if I can get them off the road. "
But obviously my bad for, ya know, caring.

Sigh ! Bad parents who don't care produce bad kids who don't care . I'm glad that you stopped . I think I would have asked him where he lived and gave whom ever was supposed to be watching him as piece of my mind ! The older I get , the more guts I get !!!!

The world is full of them!

I always felt that in many cases the dogs are the brightest and best behaved of the batch!

I think you read the situation correctly, Sunny, and did as much as you realistically could.
Agreed.

At least they got to live to see another day. Perhaps they were strays to begin with and the family just feeds them? I take care of the pets that I take in, but other people may not. If Spooks (A cat that roamed into our house through the sliding glass door a few summers ago and started eating the dogs food) were to run outside into the road, I would definitely go chasing after her! She was returned to her home a few days after we found her (Turns out she lived a few blocks down but the owners didn't put up signs; we did when we found her though). I think most people would treat take-ins like we did, but some families might just think, "Hey, they came from the outside, they can stay there if they want".

I would have just taken them, though. If the kid didn't speak up, it's his own fault. He should have been watching the dogs in the first place.
