I am SO TIRED of irresponsible dog owners and their aggressive dogs ruining my fun time with my dogs.
I was out with Dakota, playing in the park because that's the only place nearby where grass is found. He and I went off the park property and onto this big grassy soccer field so I could let him offlead (Dogs aren't allowed off leash inside the park but they can play on the soccer field.) I had him off the leash and was playing frisbee with him, and practicing heelwork inbetween throws.
Some IDIOT all the way on the other side of the park had her Pit Bull off leash, and I didn't notice that the dog was coming toward us (I had my back turned the other way) until it slammed into Dakota, and pushed him into the back of my legs. I have luxating patellas - my kneecap went out due to the force of my dog being slamed into me, and I fell down. The entire time I am trying to get my kneecap back into place, this dog is TERRIFYING Dakota, snapping and growling every time my dog stopped running. Dakota (The little goof ) decided it would be best to come and hide near me while I'm still on the ground, and the Pit starts barking and growling at ME, when I tell it to get outta here.
The owner, meanwhile, is just standing there and calling the dog. Obviously the brute isn't listening to her, but it doesn't seem to occur to her to go and GET the **** thing. I had my knee back in place but couldn't get up now because I had a scared BC on my lap. I had nothing to do except beat the dog away with the frisbee and leash. I don't remember what I did, but I think I hit the dog's face with the metal clip of the leash, and it backed off. The **** owner finally made her way over and actually CONSOLED her dog, and glared at me. The bitch actually had the nerve to say "Oh my god, he was just PLAYING! What the hell is your problem?" when I am in pain on the ground, my dog is absolutely terrified, and her dog has worked itself up into a snapping, frothing, barking frenzy. When she finally restrained the big, dumb brute, I was able to get up and walk away to check my dog over. Not once did she apologize, not once did she ask if my dog was okay, she just said "poor baby, you don't get to play today" and left.
I can't imagine having the audacity to react in such a way - I apologize profusely if my dog even tries to visit with someone who walks next to him. I would be absolutely falling all over the person, trying to help them, if he ran across a field and mauled them. (Of course, he'd maul them with kisses and tail-beatings, but he'd still knock them down. )
Grr.. My blood is just boiling over this. People like this lady shouldn't own dogs or be able to reproduce, and dogs like that need to be kept AWAY from civilized places.
Dakota is okay, he was a little shaken over it and has a little cut on his ear (Thankfully it's just a scratch and not a split ear.) but I know that ALL the progress I made with him, on trying to build up his confidence and reduce his anxiousness, has totally been shattered. I don't know why dogs target him and attack him, but he's been through this before with a neighbor's GSD, and he'd only recently fully recovered from that to the point of being his normal self with GSD-type dogs again. Now, all our progress is totally gone and I don't know where to begin, trying to get him to relax again.
Just had to share my frustration, sorry for the long post.
