Hi,

I have a 3yo mini-schnauzer who went to puppy class and did well with obedience and listening. All of a sudden he has decided he is not going to listen and constantly scrounge for food. He has also become excessively needy but is not attention deprived at all!

Are there any other Schnauzer owners that have experienced this problem or similar problems, and what did you do to correct it.

Thanks in advance.

I would have her checked by a vet to rule out any health problems first.

Once health problems are ruled out you can begin having several short daily training sessions with her. If she is food motivated you can use treats or even use part of her daily meal. Keep the sessions short and fun to keep her interested.

You say that your dog went to obedience class and did well, was obedient. Is this past tense? Did you continue working with your dog every day or just about every day? Training in an ongoing process for the life of the dog....if you want to keep the dog in shape that way.

What kind of methods are you using to train or show him things? Is he not listening only when somewhere where there is a lot of distraction? Or is he not listening at all, even inside the house? What kinds of things is he not listening to? What do you do when he doesn't listen? What kinds of specific situations can you describe? What have you done in those situations to try and correct them?

How much exercise (not that they probably need a lot) and brain work does your dog get? What's his day like?

When you say excessively needy, what do you mean? What does he do that seems to be needy? And how do you react to whatever it is he's doing?

Is your dog neutered, and if so, at what age was he neutered?

If we can get a little more of a feeling of exactly what's going on, I think you can get more specific and useful help.
