One of my beagles apparently is not doing well on EVO. For the last few days, she has been very hesistant to eat it. She's had 3 accidents in the house in the last 3 days. This morning she threw up twice.

This all started when I switched from Blue Buffalo to EVO. Should I go back to Buffalo?

Sounds like you need to switch off. Our dog had a completely unexpected accident on Innova Adult. We think it's because it constipated him so he didn't have to go until half way through the night. I walked him two miles to "induce" before going to bed so he had plenty of chances, but nothing came out.

We're transitioning back to Canidae and his stool is already way more normal.

Should I go back to Blue Buffalo or should I try something else like Canidae or Barking at the Moon?

EVO is a great food, but, a very rich food, and some dogs can't handle it. It's obvious that this is the case with your Beagle, and yes, I would switch to something else if your dog is having problems with it.

My Dobe gets loose stools from just about everything except Natural Balance, venison and brown rice. What I feed has one, single meat which is easy on dogs with allergies and sensative stomachs. However, if your dog does fine on Canidae, for example, I would recommend that over Natural Balance. It has more variety...more meat and a lot of other good ingredients that the Natural Balance doesn't have because too many ingredients, depending on what they are can upset a dog with a sensative stomach or tendency toward allergies. I feed my other dogs Canidae or Chicken Soup for the Dog Lover's Soul (I think it has four meats). There are other good premium foods too with more variety of meat, more meat and lots of suppliments but I can't get those where I live. From what I understand, a variety of meats is what you want to aim for. That's why raw feeders vary their dog's meats a lot. One meat just doesn't have everything a dog needs. One meat will have some of what a dog should have. Another meat will have something else a dog should have etc.

The EVO may very well be too rich for your Beagle. Canidae or Eagle Pack might be good things to try. You can probably get samples of them for free where you buy your dog's food.

Natura's other products aren't as rich as the EVO. They also make regular formula Innova products, Karma, and California Natural and Healthwise.

Eagle Pack and Canidae are great for diarrhea, even if you switch the food suddenly.

That is too bad about the EVO. I have heard a lot of similar stories lately. I wonder if they switched something in their formula? My dogs always tolerated that food really well and they always had VERY firm stools and I fed it to 4 different dogs:confused:

Just find something that works. I don't really care for Blue Buffalo because of the Menadione in it.

Pugs, I've wondered if the EVO isn't better for heavily muscled dogs, but maybe just too rich for dogs that aren't so much . . .

I've also wondered if part of it isn't overfeeding. It's hard to resist giving them more than they actually need because it just seems like such a small amount of food.

You wouldn't have said that if you saw Lyric when he was a pup and I fed Canidae. It may be good for some, but it sure did a number on Lyric. LOL. I'd like to try it again on him now that he is older. Maybe he changed. Maybe he's tougher. I have it for the other dogs. Hmmmm......I'm kind of scared. But if I do, first I'll finish the bag of NB we have.

Could be the over-feeding issue. My pugs just got 1/4 cup twice a day which was half of what they normally eat. They always did fabulous on the EVO... Could have something to do with body type as well I suppose. :)

Have you tried the Eagle Pack Holistic Select Line? They have a few single protein source foods that a lot of people have had a lot of success with. Eagle Pack seems to be great for dogs with diarrhea.

I said what I said about the Canidae because I have never had a problem with it and I have fed it to about 8 dogs... Too bad it didn't set well with Lyric. Some dogs are just REALLY sensitive.

I haven't tried the Eagle Pack. I am really limited as to what I can find around here. As it is, I have to drive an hour and a half to get the NB, an hour to get Canidae or Chicken Soup. LOL. So, when I go, I stock up to last me for a while. But I'll keep my eyes open for the Eagle Pack. Thanks for the tip! I just might try Lyric again on the Canidae and see if he's gotten tougher in his maturity. I think sometimes puppies have more of a propensity to that sort of thing....not sure, but....might give it another try.

Hey, I don't know if this link would help you, but they ship to Idaho for free. I think their food prices are a little higher, but it may save you the trip.

Thanks for all the feedback.

Oddly enough, one of my beagles loves EVO and is doing fine on it. I switched the other beagle to Solid Gold's Barking at the Moon and she has devoured it. So far, so good.
