Okay so last night this poor starving dog wandered up to our house. He's in terrible shape. He's covered in fleas and ticks. I gave him frontline, fed and watered him. Tomorrow I tackle the ticks...I'm going to try sevin dust. We're waiting to see if he sticks around before we take him to the vet. He's obviously been someone's dog. He's probably someone's dear hunting companion who got lost. He's friendly and oh so sweet.

I estimate that he is somewhere between 18 months and 2 years old, and I know he's a hound dog of some sort. (But I won't argue if someone tells me I'm wrong) So here he is:

He's a hound of some sort. He's also got "kennel elbow". Where the hair is rubbed off from laying on a hard or rough surface alot. Maybe a Pointer/Basset mix ???

Aw, what cutie! He looks like a Fox Hound. What a kind heart you have for taking him in.

That's the best I could get! He won't sit still because if I'm near him he wants me to pet him. Insists that I pet him. My son is a little over 3 feet tall and his head is level with the bottom of his neck. so the top of his head is about 2 feet. He's super skinny right now. I think they're supposed to be skinny, but not that skinny.

i was agoing to say harrier also... i would be careful about the seven dust on top of the frontline..but i am scared of all pesticides in the first place. I would ask a vet before i did it. You have found a good looking dog there! Some dogs just prefer the floor and like Mary have callouses on their elbows tho they have soft beds and couches available. Heavier dogs often get them. THis might be a very very lost dog!

That's an awesome beagle. It has to be part beagle. I would love to take him but we just got another beagle so my dad would never allow it. Make sure it gets better though! I'd hate to see him do bad.

Definitely a foxhound or treeing walker. A hunter probably dumped him because he wasn't hunting material. The rescue I volunteer for takes in lots of hounds from the pound all the time that hunters dumped there because they wouldn't hunt or they didn't have the proper drive. Kudos to you for taking him in! :)

So glad your helping him out!!
Looks like a treeing walker coonhound to me too.

I also think you shouldn't use sevin dust. The frontline should kill the ticks anyway. Or you could just pick them off.

My husband and I took his picture to the vet offices and the animal shelter. I'm also thinking he might be older than I thought. Anyway, I'm going to give the frontline a few days to work. We'll take him to the vet Friday if no one claims him. I'm really afraid of all the things that could be wrong. I'm assuming he came from a hunter and around here, they don't generally take care of their dogs like you or I do. He has probably never been to the vet. Is there such a thing as too old to neuter? Also, if he has heart worms, what would you do? The treatment itself could kill him...

I would bet that it is a walker and a very pretty guy too. Check to see if he is micro chipped. Sometimes when we were out hunting some of these guys trailed their prey so far that the owner could not find them again.
We found several of them and brought them back to town and ran ad in paper and the owners were very glad to get them back and paid us for anything we had done to them.
A well trainned hunting dog is very valuable. They will get fleas and ticks while in the woods hunting. Try placing an ad and see if he is chipped. He may be stand offish due to the fact hounds prefer one person and are not real friendly to strangers.

hunters around here take very good care of their dogs and they still get fleas and ticks they get it from the woods. i wouldnt neuter until you are sure he isnt anyones dogs because good huntin dogs are hard to come by and you are gonna have a very pissed hunter if you neuter a good huntin dog. but i second the chip idea. and have you tried feed stores in your area??? post your numbers there since most hunters at least in my area frequent them. Its the best place to actully get trainin tip and vet recomendations :D
