Today I was in town going to the feed store and in the feed store there was a man with his son and a big beautiful very pudgie black lab. the boy had to be i don't know between 4-5 years old and he was just bouncing off the walls. The dad gave the kid the dogs leash  and im thinking this guy is obviousely not too bright. So I went back to my ordering and kinda forgot about the man and his kid and the lab then out of the corner of my eye I see the kid walking the big dog near the counter. I smiled at him he smiled at me and then he pulled his dogs tail!!! Before i could say a word the dog turned in reaction and bit the boy in the hand.

This kid did'nt cry or yell but simply bit the dog back! Ok being a mushers daughter I always knew a way to get a puppy to stop biting is to bite it back (old way of thinking I never use) in the scruff of the neck. And thats where this boy bit this dog until it yelped! I was a bit taken aback and just told him he should bite his dog but he just smiled at me again and rubbed his dogs ears and walked away back to his dad who was calling him by then.

It was strange .

I don't know my five year old handles my Bell better than anyone in the house and she is six ( Bell and Emma are kinder spirits though)... but a lab- I would be worried that the dog would handle the kid!

It depends on the dog, Maggie is only two and Carey is very big. But when Maggie takes Carey by the collar and tells her "come on" Carey goes whereever Maggie wants her to. Until Carey has enough and then she just stops and goes where she wants :D But I would certainly not let Maggie walk her in public, I barely can b/c she pulls sometimes.

I just think it's irresponsible to let a small child handle another creature. They could easily injure the animal and/or the animal could easily injure the child. I have a two-year-old nephew, he loves to walk the dogs, but I make sure my hands are on the leash as well, because I can handle the dogs. A 25 maybe 30 pound little boy cannot handle a dog that weighs twice his size.

I agree Gaddy. Just a couple of days ago I went to a baseball game of my little brother's. Well, this kid that was probably about 6 was walking a Cocker Spaniel. Well, kinda walking. THe kid was either dragging the dog, or the dog was dragging the kids, depending. The kid could barely control it, and I noticed that the dogs collar was about three inches to big (there were three inches just sitting there when the collar was pulled tight). I thought, "Man, they way those two are tugging at each other, that dog is going to slip its collar." And sure enough, I later saw the dog running around without the boy, collar, or leash. I went and grabbed the dog, and then a lady came up that apperently knew the dog because she picked him up and took him back to the boy. I was thinking, "Um, parents, why are you letting this kid handle the dog?!?"

Exactly. You can't expect a little kid to handle an animal. Gabe's parents (my sister and my brother-in-law) have nine dogs. They teach him to respect animals and the animals to respect him. I don't think I'd trust a kid under 10 to handle a dog. Gabe has 8 more years until he's 10.
