I think they're made from Pyrex or some other heat resistant glass so you needn't worry about them breaking under the weight while hot.

Unless you're trying to heat a cauldron on one I think you'll be OK. My aunt has one and it's done fine in a house of 6.

Edit: I think if you are staying electric and not switching to gas then it definately is the way to go!

I bot a ceramic stovetop last November. All I can say is that I absolutley love it! It is much easier to clean and it heats far more evenly than a coil burner does. I have heard somewhere that you can't put a cast iron skillet on it but I don't have one anyway so I never really looked into it any further. This is the second one I have had (had one in a rent house years ago) and I have never had any trouble with it.

I will warn you, there are a lot of choices. We ended up getting a 4 burner with one burner that has two sizes and on the other side we have a bridge we can use between two other burners. They say the knobless ones aren't all they are cracked up to be. I went to an appliance place around here that I like and was buying multiple appliances. They guy showed me a whirlpool that had all the same features for about $200 more. We ended up getting a Frigidaire which he said was a great stovetop.

Hope that helps and happy stove buying.

IMO, NO. Maybe as a second one if you also have a "normal" stove. They are a pain. Can't scratch them - it could mess them up. Can't let things spill/burn on - that WILL mess them up over time, even if you clean it off. They're just a pain.. I like them for some reasons, most notably the even heating, but mostly.. eh.

I've got an electric glass/flat top and so far I lurves it. Even heating, haven't had an issue with cast iron on it and it stands up to a whole bunch of stuff we do to it. Don't know the "correct" protocall for real, but for ignorant abuse, it's standing up pretty nicely. I think it's a Kenmore.

Ours is porcelin ( propane) but I have also had in the glass with electric. Only negative thing about either of them is you have to watch what cleaner you use. The soft scrubs stuff works well and doesnt leave scratches in the surface that over time would dull it. Ours are Jenn-Air.
I would suggest however that you get one a dark color ( like black). My mother in law has a white one, and there are color changes from heat. It could be though that hers is older.

Didn't know about that, Nolu . . .

I hope I never have to go back to an electric stove though
