I slap my dogs on the rear on occasion, Harry in particular. It's more to get their attention when they are hell-bent on getting something that they should not. I probably thump them harder on the ribcage in play, so it's not like I'm beating them. But then, I'm also one that thinks an e-collar is a fabulous tool when used correctly.

I do think that yelling could be abusive to some dogs. My APBT was such a softy that yelling at him left him a quivering bowl of jelly. My current dogs just roll their eyes if you yell.
