Hey all, I am looking to get a dog, but not sure what kind. I have done the dog breed selectors online, but dont really like any of them that are coming up. Except the labrador retriever. I was also considering adopting a pup. I am looking for a dog that is around maybe 60 or 70 pounds, that is also a easier dog to maintain. The dogs I was thinking of are: lab, german shepherd, well pretty much I am open to any ideas. If you have questions please post.

Ooo, I love these!

Can you give us some more information on your lifestyle? Active (how much excersize can you provide)? Hours away from home? Experiance with dogs? Shedding preferance/how much are you willing to groom?

We'll gladly give you some suggestions ;)

When you choose the breed of dog that you want, you have to not only look at their personality and such, but also look at what type of health risks you may come into.

I know that with labs, some have skin allergies or skin problems.
I know with Belgian SHepherds some have epilepsy, as well as allergies
GSDs with hip dysplasia

If you want to get a purebred, go with a highly respected breeder for sure! Make sure BOTH parents were tested BEFORE breeding and that the pups were well taken care of during and after birth!

More info on your lifestle would be best to suit you with a dog as well :)

Since you're not in love with a specific breed, why not check out a shelter? I'm sure there are plenty of dogs there who will fit all your criteria.

Even if you are interested in a certain breed, there's often a good chance you can find one in shelters. Labs are so overbred :( that it's easy to find labs and lab mixes in shelters, including Labrador/German Shepherd crosses.

I sure can. Sometimes it all depends. Most of the time I could give exercise to the dog everyday. Probably between 30 minutes-an hour. Mixing in backyard play with toys, walks, and stimulation indoors. Saturdays and Sundays I will be home all day pretty much. Mondays I leave the house at about 7:00 and get back around 3:40 in the afternoon. Tuesdays- fridays it will be the same thing, but at least one person will be home, but will leave for only about an hour or 2 then come back. I have had dogs a long time ago germen shepherds, but it has been a long time. But I am around dogs all the time usually. I dont really have a shedding preference, but it would be nice if the dog didnt shed too much. Does this help?

I have looked at a few shelters lately, I saw a 8 month old shepherd pit bull mix but cant get him because of the ban down here where I live. I also saw a great pyrenees golden retriever mix that was 4 years old.

Sure does.

GSD's shed like crazy  but they really are great dogs if you can get past that. Sometimes, if you're patient, you will find The greatest dog at a shelter. It might take a while, depending on your location and the popular breeds where you live, but you'll find one ;) I'd really look into rescuing, puppies are really cute, but they're a lot of work - it'll take longer to house train if you're not home a lot.
Have you ever been to www.petfinder.com ??

If you go with a purebred lab I would get a one from Show lines. They are more laid back.
Otherwise there are tons and tons of labs in the shelters. Puppys too!
petfinder.com is a good place to start if you dont care if its pure or not.

If you want pure find a few breed clubs in your area. They usually have lists of breeders who are reputable. Be prepared to pay a pretty penny:)

yes, I have been to petfinder.com in fact I am there now haha. But one thing I have found is that sometimes it doesnt get updated that great in my area, maybe it has just been awhile. What kind of dogs do you all suggest? Even if I am on petfinder and it is mixed.

hard to say? Why not call a rescue organization like humane society. Often they have foster homes where you can go visit and they have a better idea of the dogs personality. You can see if theres a dog there thats a good fit for you:)

Not that I know of at the moment, but there probably are. Do you know of anyway to find this out online?

I'd have to agree with MK&C and go with Precious the lab/dobe mix.

That's just my opinion :).
