Thanks Coop. :D

His appointment is at 3PM (Eastern time). I'll be sure to update afterward.

We're heading out in a few minutes.

This morning Ares bit me. :(:(:(

Keep your fingers crossed for the vet to figure out something.

Well, we came back with a clean bill of health. :wall::wall::wall:

Although some of the numbers on his recent bloodwork were off...but the vet doesn't think it means anything. His T4 (apparently only a T4 was done) looks to me like a low normal. I think it'd be worth it to do a full thyroid panel, vet didn't seem interested.:mad:

I did get a referral for the local veterinary behaviorist though, so we'll follow up there.

Zoom, send me some of those strawberry daiquiris please.

(Sigh.) For once, I was HOPING to hear about a physical problem, one that could be understood and dealt with. Maybe a more thorough thyroid panel would show something, although I doubt it. Still, possibly worth a try.

When can you make an appointment with the behaviorist? What are his/her credentials? (Of course, you've had sooo much time to make arrangements!)

Glubbing a strawberry daiquiri in your honor.

All I know as far as credentials is what's on the website:
Dr. Gerrard Flannigan received his DVM from Ontario Veterinary College at the University of Guelph. After practicing general veterinary medicine for four years, he then attended Tufts University School of Veterinary Medicine where he completed a residency in Clinical Behavior. Dr. Flannigan is a Diplomate with the American College of Veterinary Behavior. (Huntersville & Greensboro)
But it's not as if we have a lot of options. If he seems horrible, I'll go running out the door.

We have an appointment for next Monday. They're sending me a questionnaire to fill out and would like me to bring another dog as well -- they'd probably prefer me to bring Nyx, but I don't think that's going to happen. Tyr will have to suffice. It's a two hour appointment and costs a small fortune.

OH no! I was with MPP, hoping they could determine something wrong, so you could know for sure what was happening.

If the vet only could do one thyroid test, he should have done a TSH. The T4 can stay close to normal even with pretty advanced disease.

Caveat---I am assuming dog thyroids are much like your and mine.

It doesn't seem to be.

As far as I know, TSH has proven to not be accurate in dogs. I think it misses 25% of hypothyroid dogs. T4 I think gives something of an idea, but ideally a T3, T4, free T3 and free T4 should be done...if I'm remembering correctly.

Also, age, gender and breed are an aspect of diagnosing hypothyroidism in dogs.

ETA:
When the T4 was done, I wasn't even aware that we were doing a thyroid test. We were there because of peeing problems. If I'd known, I would have asked for a full thyroid panel at the time.

Insist. You have the right to ask for anything to be done with your dog. If you are the paying customer he cannot refuse you!
