The dogs finally finished off the bag of Nutro, so I went to Clear Lake Kennels to buy better food. One bag of Innova puppy food and one bag of Innova adult dog food, $99.01

I know it has less filler so they will eat less; and I know I want my dogs to have the best, but I got to take a minute to recover, lol.

The dogs loved the Innova at dinnertime, and the people there are nice, one young lady talked for a while on food theory and said a lot of the things I have seen posted here; so I will be over there again soon I'm sure.

Lol. I just bought my dogs' first bag off Evo today too and almost had a heart attack myself. Hubby was with me and I wouldn't tell him how much it was. But, as you know, if you think about it that crap you were feeding them ends up costing the same because of the amount you have to feed them. My Cassie wasn't impressed at first. I'm going gradual because she has tummy problems. She picked the evo out and put it on the floor. After she saw the puppy eating it, though, she was motivated to at least try it. You're doing the right thing....

I know I do a double take everytime I go to buy more Innova regular for Mojo. It costs about $40 for a 33lb bag - but then I shake and remind myself that this 33lb bag will last me well over 2 months with my one 45lb dog... and it is one of the few foods Mojo eats with a lot of enthusiasm. I hope to eventually switch up to Innova Evo once I get my raise in April... then I can do the double and triple takes all over again! ;)

Yep, I had sticker shock at first also. Hubby, even more. But, it is worth it in the long run. Now your dogs will have the "Innova Glow" or "Innova Wax Job"
as I call it.
They are nice at Clearlake Kennel.

I have been told that Blue Buffalo, which I use, is overpriced. But, looking at the prices cited above, it seems right in line with the other premiere foods.

$40 for a 30 pound bag.

The actual price can be evaluated by comparing ingredients, usable nutrients and feeding amounts . . .
Blue Buffalo is very good.

Its not that good. Its right around proplan. There is better and worse.
Yup it is not that good for the price.

I feed Kirkland Signatures which is better and it is $20/40pound bag...Canadian funds.

I have recently switched from the Chicken and rice to the Lamb and rice which is $2 more! $22 per 40 pound bag.

i wouldn't go as far as comparing blue buffalo to pro plan. it has no byproducts, no generic animal ingredients, is made with whole grains instead of brewer's rice etc. and doesn't contain corn gluten as a cheap protein filler either.

it's a pretty good food, comparable for example to what wellness is now, but in my opinion it's even a step up from that. certainly much better than the kirkland signature food.

in the caloric range it's right up there with brands like innova, canidae and so on. the only ingredient i object to in it is menadione and i think the food is overpriced, compared to for example innova.

See I need low calories for Yukon's shoulders so Innova, Canidae and so on are way to high, as is blue buffalo. So Kirkland Signatures is much better for my dogs!:D

yup, you can simply control caloric intake by feeding appropriate amounts. :)

Well, just feed less of it, I would think?
Then he howls because he thinks he is hungry. He goes bonkers when I get the meals ready because again he thinks he is hungry. I cannot starve him to get lower calories.

He eats 3 cups of Kirkland Signatures right now. No raw!

Canidae he would only be allowed 3/4 cup a day not enough for a 80+pound shepherd who is still growing.

that doesn't really make sense.

even a still growing puppy of 25 pounds would get more than that, and an adult 80 lb dog would also get 3-4 cups a day.

3/4 cup of canidae is approximately 352 kcal, that's less than a moderately active 10 pound dog needs per day.

what's the caloric content of the kirkland food?
