Okay, there is a woman that comes to the local dog park that has a Labradoodle. It's a really sweet dog, really cute, and affectionate. She loves her dog, and she is always recommending that people get a Labradoodle. She makes the following claims:

1) Labradoodles aren't hyper like Goldendoodles.

2) All Labradoodles are hypoallergenic, but not all Goldendoodles are.

3) Labradoodles have a better temperament and are better with children than Standard Poodles.

These claims seem pretty ridiculous to me... anyone want to weigh in?

Sounds like she bought the sales pitch hook line and sinker.

^^^Yeah, pretty much.

Let's see, just from personal experience with the Labradoodles that come into work...

-Labdoos and Goldendoos have about the same amount of activity level, with a possible skew towards the Goldendoos being less hyper, though the less hyper ones are more skittish, which could account.
-only 2 out of 15 have had the "hypoallergenic" coat, all others were the shedding variety.
-I might be inclined to believe this a little bit, as most of the standards that come in are very skittish and prone to snappiness, whereas only two or three doodles I can think off require "special" handling.

Overall though, it's about the same variations you'd see with any popular breed.

Oh...you know that I have to weigh in on this..;)

I have a lot (too many) labradoodles and goldendoodles in class and find that many shed, particularly goldendoodles although their coats are nicer in my opinion.

I do have quite a few owners "claim" that, while they are usually very allergic to other breeds..they don't react to their doodles (labradoodle more than goldendoodle)..This could be chalked up to wishful thinking but my son is allergic to poodles and is not allergic to Sophie..

I find goldendoodles and labradoodles less hyper (generally) than labs for sure but I meet a lot of very calm goldens.

As far as being better with kids and having a more tolerant temperment, I absolutely agree with this...again - I train a lot of all three breeds. There are of course gross exceptions but this has been my experience at least.

My own Labradoodle is extremely calm and always has been. Does not shed and loves everyone, she has the most stable temperment I could imagine.
Her best pal Deisel, also a labradoodle - loves all dogs and people but does tend towards the dominant side with other dogs. He does not shed but is hyper as all get out. He's just under a year old mind you but is much more hyper than Sophie ever was.
Both dogs are very quick to learn but I've met poodles who would rival both...:)

That's how hers is too, and she seems to think that all Labradoodles are that way. She's a nice lady... she means well. But she sounds like an informercial for the Labradoodle. :p Her dog is a really good example of the mix though.

Anyway, thanks for the info Doc and Zoom. :D

To me , unless it's a 3rd or 4th generation breeding , you can't make any general statments. That's why I'd only look into the Australian breed Labradoodles.

Majority of labradoodles and goldengoodles I've met had screwed up temperaments, weren't stable, and were hyper. Also have seemed rather obnoxiously 'dumb'. I've never met one that seemed how you all are describing.

I'm not at all for breeding first generation mixes but I just hate hearing statements like "obnoxiously dumb" about any dog, mix or otherwise. As a trainer, I find that observation not only very narrow but considering the fact that both breeds in each mix are extremely intelligent grossly inacurate.
...Not sure how I can train the numbers that I do and not meet any fitting your description....not one!

Grammy - you're absolutely right about the generational thing too of course.:)

I think labradoodles are wonderful if they come from good parents and quality lines. The ones I've met have been sweet, good natured and have almost an intuitive quality about them.

I don't think anyone is saying they should be bred... I wasn't trying to make this thread about that. Like it or not, they exist. Therefore there are plenty of doodle mixes in shelters that need homes. This lady just made me curious, and I wanted to get people's input about the Standard Poodle vs the mixes.

We have 3 Labradoodles in our area.

All three are insanely hyper, shed, and are out of control.

I know it is not the dogs fault that they are out of control, but either way they are crazy hyper and aren't very stable temperment wise.

I have met both goldendoodles & labradoodles in classes and I do have to say they have all been sweet. Some more hyper than others but I can say that about all breeds. Some of them have shed, a few are very low shedding or non-shedding. I have seen a tremendous amount of difference of appearance in both of the mixes in both body and hair. We even had a labradoodle from Australia and while he was a very nice dog I personally wouldn't have spent $3,000 for him as his owners did.

I have 2 standard poodles and we have a few others in class. Again some more hyper than others. None of them shed & they are all very similar in appearance with the biggest difference between them being color. All are sweet and very friendly with people and other dogs. My standards have always been great with my 2 young grandsons. The boys are now 10 & 8 while Farley & Chloe are almost 8 & 6 so they have pretty much grown up together.

UM Yeah  A lady at my daughters school just bought a Labradoodle puppy at a bargain price of only $1200 for her kids for CHRISTMAS  I asked her if she is ready for the RESPONSIBILITY because we all know the kids aren't going to care for it. I also told her that I wish she had talked to me about it before buying a mutt and a doodle for that matter. I would have talked her out of it :(

What's up with that  ? I was being sarcastic LOL! I am so sick of people saying how wonderful this "breed" is. Years ago they were called a mutt and like others said there are now plenty in shelter thanks to all the irresponsible breeders in the world.

I guess it's just that we've been over this so many times on here. I was hoping that this time we'd be able to stay on topic.
Although I do have a Labradoodle from Australia, I do not support the mixing of the lab and poodle just to make a buck.. It's just exasperating to coninually have to flog this dead horse. Can we please get back on topic?

Oh, and I'm very aware that you were being sarchstic..

I've had plenty of doodles as clients and for the most part they've been very flighty, hyper and many were on the shy side. I wouldn't call them "dumb" by any means, but they do remind of Reese Witherspoon in Legally Blond. :D

I think the woman who's promoting these dogs was lucky enough to get one with a great temperament and easy going way, and of course she thinks they're all like that...

I'm sorry, I love ALL dogs and I do think the doodles look like a fuzzy muppet which are cute. You are right though we have talked about this to much already. Sorry if I went off topic
