Last night I was sitting in the house and my dog, Biscuit, was outside. All of a sudden I smell this horrible pungent odor. It wasn't skunk but it was pretty wretched. I let my dog in and she's frantic and her eye is bothering her. After I gave her eye drops she paced around the house for a half hour and was panting rapidly so she was obviously stressed by something. She eventually calmed down and everything's fine but this is the second time this has happened this summer.

The first time she stunk so I had to bathe her. This time she doesn't stink but my house does now. It always seems to be on her face (whatever it is) rather than her body.

I live in a suburb of Chicago (with fenced-in yards) so there's only so much wildlife here. I can't find anything on the Internet and it's driving me NUTS! Has anyhone else had this happen?

She might have gotten frightened and expressed her anal glands. That doesn't explain the eye problem, but she could have gotten it on her face by turning around to clean herself. Anal glad secretions have a nasty odor.

Hmmm, my friend mentioned anal glands too. Would the smell be that powerful as to come into the house when all the doors and windows are closed? I mean that's amazing.

It's an amazing stink... I always thought anal glands smelled like those fly traps, you know the bags you hang up with the liquid stuff inside. If you've smelled those and it's similar to what you're smelling, I'd say that's your culprit.

I would be willing to bet it was a skunk. Skunk spray at first and very close doesn't smell like normal skunk spray.
One of my dogs was sprayed right at my back door (I saw the skunk) and the dog plus my house had this terrible smell. We couldn't breath and it was bad.
It sounds like she got sprayed in the face and up close, you should rinse her eyes out a lot with just water. It is normal for a dog to rub their face and eyes when sprayed directly and sometimes if it is very close to have a yellow stain on the face.

Skunk spray has sulphuric acid it and it IS toxic, not uncommom for a dog to have trouble breathing, puking etc after a direct hit.

For earthworkers (jrts etc) the spray is deadly, many good earthworking terriers have lost their lives when sprayed in the earth.
