My boy wulfy has experienced our first ever split nail. At the time that it happened he didn't even realize that anything was wrong....just left a trail of blood everywhere he went.

We stopped the bleeding and trimmed the nail down as much as we dared. After a couple days of limping he seemed to get better. That was about a week ago. Now he is limping again. The nail isn't discolored and the toe isn't warm to the touch, not swollen or particularly sensitive when we manipulate it. I thought the split may have moved up but cannot see it now and there is no bleeding.

I know toenail issues can be extremely painful. does anyone have experience in how long this will take to heal/grow out?.

It depends on where the splits is and how quiet you can keep him plus it is important to keep it very clean.
I had a dog break his nail high in the nail bed, I took him to the vets and they should have just removed the nail to allow another one to grow back. (I thought this was what the vet was going to do, but they didn't)
Because it was spring and although he was bandaged, we ended up with recurring infections. It took 6 months to heal. I wasn't happy with my vet, if they have removed it, he would have healed much faster and without near the pain that he suffered.
I keep this dog bandaged (I know how to bandage because of working professinally with horses), I soaked it and he was on meds........but because of the mud, once it got infected it was hard to clear up. We also had a very wet spring that year which didn't help.

I have been watching for signs of infection and in fact it is now almost impossible to see where the nail split. I have considered having the nail pulled but was hoping to avoid that.

Thanks for the response.
