I don't think there's anything "wrong" with them... it's just for a look. But I do think it can give people the wrong perception. My aunt has a Pit Bull and doesn't want a spiked collar on him because she doesn't want him to be even more unapproachable (he's already got stereotyped because of his breed) and he's the friendliest dog you'll ever meet. I don't really like them personally -- just, I don't like the look of them. Plus I think it'd be uncomfortable if the dogs lays down with a collar on and there's spikes on it. But some spikes are just way out of control, you've got others that look better and are not so huge.

I personally like the look of spiked collars - I think they are gorgeous. (Mild spikes, mind you, not "scary" spikes. And I think the cheap ones look, well....cheap. LOL) I probably wouldn't mind putting one on a "questionable" breed, but I also think a well made leather collar would look just as stunning. I've seen a few dogs with spiked collars and that has never made me think, "Oh, man, those dogs look mean!" *shrugs* Could just be me, though.

If Chloe didn't have such long fuzz and you'd actually be able to see her collar, I'd spend the money on a nice pink leather collar for her. I think it'd make her look sexy. LOL

I think they're fine. I think Chloe would look adorable with one. :p But like JacksonsMom mentioned, I'd be worried it wouldn't be comfortable if the dog was trying to curl up and go to sleep, or lay down, and the spikes would be poking into the dog's neck or leg or something. I'd be even more afraid of dogs playing, and the dog with the spiked collar, poking out the eye of the other dog, or injuring it's mouth.

where's mah food option lol.

None of the above?
Yeah.

They aren't good or bad... I don't think I'd get one for Roman, but don't have a problem with them in general... I think for some breeds it isn't the best idea if you want your dog to be an "ambassador."

My biggest problem with spikes on a collar is they are rough on my hands, because I absent-mindedly handle my dog's collar a lot to pet her or scratch underneath it. I really don't care what other people put around their dog's neck, as long as the dog HAS a collar and it fits properly.

To me, the real spiked collars are the ones LGDs wear.

Everything else is just for looks.

lol I think of those whenever I hear "spiked collar." They kind of put all the rest to shame on the badass scale, don't they?

Those are awesome, and really good defense for a LGD, but how do they not hurt the dogs when they curl up to sleep?

None of those options really fit what I think.

I don't think its a good idea to get one for a breed with stereotyping problems. I think it makes the matter worse and is counterproductive in changing people's perceptions.

That said, I don't have a problem with them. They just aren't my cup of tea in terms of looks *shrug*

I wouldn't put one on my dogs, but that's because I value being pain-free.
And with two pit bull puppies, well...I'd be asking for injury to either myself or one of them if I put them in spiked collars.

Spikes have been used on ALL KINDS of dogs and their collars for centuries.

When Lilly was still alive, we bought her one. Radar ate it. Literally, ate the leather and all of the (thankfully blunted) spikes. Do you know what fun is? It's rooting through his poop for 4 days and counting the spikes to make sure they all came out.

I've wanted to get Lucy a pink one. Of course I don't want anyone thinking she's a nasty little ankle biter, but all it takes is watching her to see that she's not, regardless of what collar she's wearing.

Lucy can get pretty rambunctious, though, so I don't want her to hurt herself or anyone else with spikes, so I decided I'd get her a collar with studs like this:

Unless the spiked collar was just for closely supervised occasions.

Oh, and on the search for images I saw tons of sites called "pit bull fashion," "pit bull gear," "pit bull store," where they sell crazy spiked muzzles and 98% of the dogs are hippos.

It sucks to be so limited by foolish people, but I would never put a spiked collar or muzzle or harness on any of my Rottweilers. People are already scared as hell of one walking down the street wearing a pink flowery collar.

Small little studs sure and Maybe if I was as out walking, but I would always be scared that one of my dogs would get their eye pocked out by the stud or my hands would get destroyed. If It was big enough.

I would love to get a leather harness with small studs things on it for my Cane Corso.

Something like this:

Oh my god that dog looks like he's half hippopotamus and half drool.

I love how he has a nice harness on and she's still grabbing his skin as a handle, LOL.
