Hello everyone, this is my first post, but I've been lurking for about a week now. I got my puppy Lowla (a Dachshund/Terrier Mix approx 11 weeks old) at a shelter last Sunday. It's a pretty reputable shelter that takes good care of their animals. Anyway, she had her spay surgery last Sunday in the morning, so its been a week, and it seems to me that they did a botch job sewing her up..or gluing her or whatever they did. I wanted to bathe her today because she is getting really irritated by all the fleas that keep jumping on board but I noticed last night when I picked away her scabs that her incision is kinda oozy. I figured after 7 days it would be well on its way to healing and definately wouldn't be oozing anything anymore. It's not a lot and she doesn't lick or bite at it, it doesn't seem to hurt or bother her at all, but I'm a little concerned and I know you folks are pretty knowledeable. When I looked at the incision pretty close after I picked off her old dried flaking scabs it didn't look like they lined up her skin very well. I'm not sure if that matters or what. So I dunno, do you think I should be concerned or give it another week? It doesn't seem swollen to me, it's about as bumped up as it was a week ago when we got her and it's not red or painful. Here's a picture if it helps. Any advice appreciated. I hope I'm just being a paranoid new puppy mommy.

I think the incision looks okay.. I am sure it will heal nicely. It doesn't look infected either.

If fleas are a concern, why not get some flea meds? I like frontline plus. You can get it from your vet, or online. There are some other good flea topicals to choose from too.

Edit: Oh yea... you really shouldn't pick at the incision site. :)

Looks like Doberkims' busy tonight! It's always best to have your vet recheck a spay/ neuter site if you have any concerns. No, it does not look infected, but unless your pup has a slight hernia, the surgical glue used did not completely hold. (That's a very small incision for a spay!) There should be a few stitches underneath that glue (?), but it is always best to have your vet recheck a spay and it's usually included in the surgical fee, so I'd reccommend taking advantage of that. Good luck with your new puppy!

it looks ok to me. she may be having a little bit of a reaction to the sutures under her skin or she may have been a little bit too active. it doesn't look red at all, which is good. i'd keep an eye on it, but leave it alone.

whew thanks, glad it looks good. Thanks for the response!! I took her to the vet two days after her surgery for her free health exam (part of the adoption package from the shelter) and the vet said it all looked good, I guess I'm just being paranoid. She's only 5 lbs so she's a little doggy. Little doggy little spay incision?? I don't know how to tell if there are sutures under there, but I guess that's part of the reason it's bumped up some?

Edit: Oh yea... you really shouldn't pick at the incision site.
*sheepish* heh, I can't help it, I have a scap picking disorder. I see a scab, I have to pick it, on me, on other people, on my dog. Gimme a little credit, I at least fended myself off for 7 days! :)

Cider's looked kinda like that. I was paro cause I thought one end was coming apart. She had disolvable stitches, and I also think th glue at one end was sort of letting go. You can't find her spay incision now though.

When my girl was spayed it was red and oozing and when it came time to take her stitches out they said "It looks a little infected" Then all they did was spray a little anti-itch spray on it and it healed up fine. It irritated my girl so much!
