My 6-month old Irish Terrier somehow managed to get a granola bar with chocolate chips away from a toddler that is visiting us. I think she ate about half of it, maybe a bit more. I don't know how many chips is in one of the bloody things, but I can't imagine it's enough to harm her. We don't have a vet emerg clinic and I haven't been able to get in touch with our vet. A granola bar with chips isn't likely to cause great harm, is it? Sigh. I'm pretty sure it's not enough to hurt her (I used to work in vet clinics) but I'm so bloody neurotic about dogs and chocolate....:(

I don't believe there is enough chocolate in a granola bar to hurt your dog. I am under the impression they'd have to have a hunk of chocolate for it to hurt them... but do check with your vet in the morning.

Keep watch! If you worked at a vet you know what choclolate can do to a dog.
Brutus ate tootsie rolls, and some chocolate cake that fell on the floor at christmas. I know it is scary.

He should be fine hopefully. I have seen a few different dogs eat chocolate including mine. And one of the dogs was mine and she is still kicking. Keep an eye out but like I said he should be fine.

Thanks everybody - I did some online research and it seems unlikely there was enough chocolate to do serious harm, aside from some possible gastrointestinal upset. And I know my old vet bosses would tell me to calm down, LOL. I'm gonna head to bed, LOL - the visiting toddler is one of 3 that belong to a friend. The kids are staying with me and my daughter while my friends have a weekend away. They came today and I'm already exhausted. Thanks again....

she's a big gurl..that's good and the chocolate chips were probably milk choc and that is good too. I didn't know better and Grandma peachy gave AAron a solid choc easter bunny when he was 2. There is no way i was giving it to him and i tossed it to the dog. Virgil was a labrador and weighed about 100 lbs. I talked to GG later and she said that it could kill a dog so of course i freaked and called the vet. He told me to give him all the milk he would drink and put him outside..neither the choc or the quarts of milk disturbed him in anyway. He didn't even get loose stools go figure....it is the unsweetened or very dark chocolate that is the demon. Especially for little dogs

Just an update....

This morning my pup seems absolutely fine, not even any diarrhea. Perhaps the toddler put up a good fight for his granola bar and she got less than I thought! Anyhow, I'll be more cautious as I thought she was securely penned in the kitchen while the toddler was in the living room, but apparently she's more of an escape artist than I realized. Thanks everyone....:)

I think different dogs can react differently...

My friend works in a vets, and only this week, a woman called up saying her dog was sick.. She said it had eaten too many sweets (chocs!!)!!

This was only a small dog, and turned out ok.

But, the point was, that my friend had only been told of another (large) dog becoming seriously ill after eating only a small amount of chocolate.

Best to play by ear, and keep a close watch :)

Good to hear your doggy is ok now :D
