The search and rescue was actually part of a large animal emergency response training session. It was pretty cool. Along with the search and rescue, we got to watch a horse and llama be "rescued" from a hole, be part of a mock barn fire (in which they filled the barn with fake smoke), and see an overturned trailer. The search and rescue was pretty exciting because a few of us interns got to play "lost" for the searchers with two horses and a llama. When we were found, we had a little scenario to play out, so one of us pretended to be a head trauma patient, we had a few passers by, and I got to be the rude media photographer who wouldn't get out of the way.
Once all of the people were dealt with, the trainees had to catch the "escaped" horse and deal with the horse with a "broken leg."
Keep in mind that all of the animals involved are trained for these teaching units, so no animals were actually hurt or in any danger at any point in time.
