My hubby went to the store tonight and I was home alone with the pup. Nothing out of the ordinary... I spend a lot of time home alone, even at night.
Well, I was listening to music rather loudly as I played a game on the computer with lola sleeping in my lap.
All of a sudden lola jumps up and starts barking and growling. I shut the music off to see if I could hear anything, but I didn't. She kept on and on with the barking and growling and perching her head out like she was looking at someone peering around the corner. She kept whining and looking at me... almost like a dog would do if they had to go out to go potty.. but if you knew lola, you'd know that she NEVER asks to go outside. She'd just drop her butt and pee. Besides.. dogs don't growl and bark like she was to go out to pee. I was sure she heard something.
Keep in mind that all the lights in the house are off... the only light was the light from the computer monitor. I had no idea if the doors were even locked and I had the music really loud so if anyone had walked into my house... I would have never heard them.
So, of course I'm thinking someone is in the house and standing perfectly still because i have the music off now. I was afraid to move. Lola then jumps off my lap and goes racing out into my living room and proceeds to keep barking and growling like she was gonna tear someone apart. It scared the living poop out of me.
The people on the game site I was on were all worried about my safety and there was this one person who kept telling me to call 911. Well, at first it just sounded like someone who was looking out for my best interest. But then this person kept talking to me like I was an idiot or something. I told them I wasn't going to call 911 because my dog was barking and growling. There was no concete evidence someone was in my house or trying to get into the house. I'm sorry.. but I just wasn't going to call 911 for that. I did call my hubby on his cell phone and told him what was going on and he said he was on his way home and that he would call my neighbor and ask him to come over and check on me. Mind you... this is the same neighbor who came over to check on us one night when we were horsing around and flickering lights on and off in the house and he thought we were trying to send him a signal we needed help. He laughed at us and said anytime we needed him for something to call him. I told the chat room in the game I was fine and that my neighbor would come over and check the place if my hubby could get a hold of him.
Well, this one person starts in on me and was insinuating I was a fool for not calling 911 in the beginning. And then went on to say how I put my neighbor's life in danger... etc. First of all... I'm not gonna tie up 911 with a barking and growling dog when someone else who is having a heart attack might not get the help they desperately need. And again... there was no evidence of anyone entering the house at that time. It was probably just a coyote she was hearing or some kind of animal outside. I'm just surprised she could hear anything with my music as loud as it was. It kind of made me mad being scolded like that. My neighbor offered a long time ago to come over if we ever needed help like that. He's a big marine guy.. and I mean HUGE.
I eventually mustered up the courage to grab something to hit someone with and ventured out into the house and began turning on all the lights. It was at that time I discovered that none of the doors were locked. I crept around the house looking around and locking doors as I still turned on lights.... waiting for someone to jump out at me. I never found anything. Did I forget to mention the ONLY thing I could find to hit someone with was a dog toy...lol. It probably wouldn't have done much damage, but maybe it could have caught someone off guard and stun them long enough for me to kick them where they'd drop to the floor and beg for forgiveness...lol.
I'm glad no one was trying to break in and that all is well. I'm also glad I didn't call 911 for a false alarm. It was just unusual behavior for her and I've just never seen her act like that before... she DEFINATELY heard something. I think it's so amazing that a puppy can have that protective nature like that.
