I took the girls Ginger Snap and Snicker's out for a walk today. Hum this was their first walk, on a leash! Was it so ever fun! To be honest with you, they did a wonderful job. Boy was I shocked!:yikes:

Anyhow, as we John the girls and I went too the doggie park, a guy walked right up too us! He seemed nice and he had a red Standard Poodle! Pretty boy he was!

This guy, begins too ask us, questions about the pups, how old are they, what type of Poodle were they? This was kinda scaring me! Especially with my week!

So John took over for me! John told this guy that they were standard Poodles, and that they were going to be spayed. That they were registered and micro chipped!

The kid or young guy said that was a shame! John said what was a shame? He said that we were going to spay the dogs. John said why should we breed them? He said well my male would compliment, the girls by bring them color into the pups and that we could make a load of money off of them!

I just about flipped my lid! :yikes: Where was my BROOM! If I would have had it I would have beat him with it! Sure this person did not know what we went through with Mugs and all. But why should we even consider breeding? We do not need to make money off of our dogs!

John, just stated that we love the dogs for who they were and not what they could make financially! We are too old to consider breeding anyhow! So we will leave it for the PROFESSIONALS!

I am so glad I had John with me, I had a lot of stuff going through my head! Such as why did this guy want too know so much about my dogs? Was he going to try and steal them? You know what I mean! Anyhow John and I left right then and there! We will not visit that Doggie park ever again!

Some people can be really tactless, can't they?

Unfortunately, it probably won't be the last time someone asks you about breeding your dogs- especially with the Poodle-cross craze going on at the moment.

At best you can think of it as just another opportunity to educate about spaying and neutering!

Yes you are right, I just have a hard time with the lot of it! Sure we need breeders, so that we can have the pets we do.

The thing about it was his approach, and how he said things! I think I will carry mace from now on!:lol-sign:

I am old and really love people and thier dogs, but don't just walk up to a walk up to some one with little puppies and ask something that stupid!:spam:

When I'm approached like this, (and it happens fairly frequently), I smile really sweetly and ask, What titles does he have, and what is his CHIC number?

I know how you feel... this happens really frequently with us as well.

Last year we were fostering a chihuahua puppy... she was very much out of breed standard, and probably had dachsund in her... anyway, we were at the park and some girl started asking us about her. I told her that she was a rescue, and then this girl asked if she could adopt her. She had a chihuahua with her, and said that they would make such cute puppies together. I explained to her that it was a horrible idea to breed a rescued dog, and she just didn't understand it. Then she asked me for my number and if she could have the dog... Uh, no. It's so frustrating.

I know after my experiance at that dog park, I will not go back! But if I do, I will place a not avail sign on their puppy coats!

When they do approach and ask what the sign means, I will tell them, No males aloud!:yikes:

The girls will be fixed in 2 months, and by then I can say, sorry there's no cookies at grand ma's house!

As per one of your previous posts, you seemed to have experience with line breeding and breeding dogs, but because you're not a proffessional breeder and these are pet quality poodles, it is good that you didn't fall into the "maybe just one litter" train of thought. There have been many others on this site breeding dogs and bragging about it that should never have bred their animals in the first place, let alone open themselves up for the scrutiny that followed. Glad to hear you're taking a very responsible approach.

Hi Muggsies... sorry to read about your dogs' passing this week. Instead of mace, nothing more convincing than telling strangers your sons' a police officer! Lol. Does he ever get to ride with the canine unit in his force?

I think John handled the situation very well. Getting angry at someone who is uneducated about breeding dogs is not the way to lessen the number of brb's. Education is a much better approach.

Thank you for your kind words. I do know some what of breeding due to the country I come from. I was always interested in this type of stuff, although when you are married and raising kids, that is not always the case!

Yes my son is a Police Officer, actually a Staff Sergent, they do not have a k-9 or dog unit! The reason being the liabilities! Mind you I have been after him to get one! Boy my son has a temper ya know! :yikes: I wonder where he gets it?:lol-sign:

My daughter, has trained her dogs in Search and Rescue, although has just lost her's a few months ago! She wants to get another one, but right now she wants to take a break! She is interested in getting one, after Christmas, and or new yr! I beleive a young lady had a dog that was suitable here on Chazhound, I directed the info too her. She said I was pushing a good thing!

So, its no good if you do, and no good if you don't! What's a old lady too do?

Yup your right just walk away and say! I raised you, now your on your own!:lol-sign:

I know one that is even worse. A friend of my uncle got a yellow lab puppy and he did not plan on getting him fixed because he wanted to "let him have a night on the town to have fun with some girl dogs" I was furious!! I've never met the man so i could not yell at him so i yelled at my uncle instead and told him about over population and everthing and he agreed. Unfortunatly the dog got hit by a logging truck and died, at least he did not contribute to unwanted litters. Of course then they went and got another puppy, I'm furious!! Some people just should not have pets! Did i mention all their pes have fleas and they don't do anything about it!! It's horrible!!

Happens to me on average once a month. Some stranger will walk up to me and show interest in Dakota. We'll talk for a while and about the time I start to think that maybe this is somebody whom I can reccomend rescue to, the $64,000 question comes...

"Is she spayed?"

My reply of course is "Yes."

Person immidiately looses interest and leaves. Seems only our dog park friends appreciate her for just being HER.

Wow, that's really sad. It's disapointing, because think of all the people that go up to people and ask those things, but also think about how many people who also accept and agree they'd make "cute pups" together.

Because of the craziness, I spoke to my vet, my grand daughters boss, I asked him if I could get the girls spayed at 41/2 months? He said I could if I wanted too!

So I need a second and a third oppinion! Should I wait the 6 weeks or should I send them in now?

This just made me angry. whe watched a movie about dogs in ag class because we had a sub for a week( he had to go to some meeting in another state), anyway, at the end of the movie the sub asked us to talk about our dogs. Then he asked if our dog were neutered. on kid blurts out "Oh yeah! We got a pimp in the neighborhood," in a sarcastic tone.

Then one kid said they had male and female goldens they were going to breed to make money. The nerve.

I have a friend whose mom breeds goldens and they estimated it out that they make a dollar every hour they spend with those pups. Not a very good income, is it?

Hello,
I wanted to comment on having the dogs spayed. I am new here and not aware of your dogs and situation, (rescued, from puppymill/petstore, bought from a breeder, ect) But, if they are strong and healthy and your vet ok's it, I would recomend spaying them now. I know pediatric alter is becomming more popular. I know lots of cat breeders that spay at 12 weeks (2 lbs) and have no problems with it being done early. I am not sure as to when to do early alters with puppies, mabey they have to be 3 or 4 lbs? But I am a strong supporter of pediatic altering.

I had a beautiful boxer years ago, and had everybody and their brother:rolleyes: interested in using him as a stud. He was beautiful and of good type, but, just not breed/show quality, and I didn't register him so he had no papers, the are so many already available with out papers and wasn't interested in adding to it. I had a few people want to make a new breed with him even, a boxer bull, (pitt boxer) I couldn't even imagine that! I don't really feel that is a breed that should be mixed intentionally, if you ask me.

As you can see, my boxer was beautiful, but is he breed/show quality? I hardly think so, and even if he was, I didn't have papers on him.
