It's definatly NOT worth the risk for anyone(esp a vet) to lie about something like that just so that they can compete in an AKC event.
Yup. I have known some vets who won't do any sort of cosmetic surgery on an intact dog because they worry that the owner might try to put it in breed shows after wards and the vet can get in trouble for that.

The question is why have a dog go for a procedure of a vasectomy rather than being neutered? Do you really think he would miss them? :rofl1:

What do you do with a dog in a dog park that requires a dog to be neutered that supposedly had a vasectomy, do you carry the piece of paper with you so that you can prove the dog has been altered?

A few months ago there was a guy in the dog park and all male dogs must be neutered, all female dogs must be spayed. This applies for any dog that is more than 6 months old. A guy brings his Great Dane in that was not neutered and was over 6 months of age. He had to leave the dog park and was not allowed to bring the dog back to the dog park until it was neutered. Now he could have said the dog had a vasectomy which he actually tried to say but no one believed it and he had no proof including the park ranger that told him he had to leave. The rules for the dog park say Neutered or Spayed. It does not say Vasectomy or Tubal Ligation.

Do you think that the AKC should change the rules just to accomodate you?. Why not just have the dog neutered and then your in compliance.

Neutered means to remove the ability to reproduce. Vasectomies do just that. And there are ways to ensure a vasectomy is 100% effective...you remove a section of tube and cauterize, then tie the two separate ends into their own individual knot. I don't care if you're a freaking lizard, after that, you ain't having' no babies.

And I bet you $20 you'd have to feel to confirm if my Aussie, or any other longhaired dog, was neutered. That area is well covered by "pants/bloomers" and would conceal the testicles on an intact dog.

Lola'sdad why don't you go back and read post number9 to this thread?

And dog parks and akc require neuters for COMPLETELY different reasons.

Why don't you quit trolling?

When Smudge is in coat you'd have no idea at all he is intact. You would have to feel up my dog. He doesn't even need to be in full coat. A few inches is enough.

When Strider was at his last show, he was the only borzoi there. The judge was actually surprised when he found a pair of testicles under the fur, he thought Strider was a girl. :rofl1:

But yeah, if someone wanted to lie about their dog being intact, they could easily do it with a female anyway. When we adopted Anko she was already spayed but the shelter wouldn't let her go without proof. The vet got as far as cutting her open before they realized she had already been done.

And the bull terrier we found we thought was spayed because she had a scar, which turned about to be a c section scar and she was still intact.

it's an interesting question. how is it worded in the paperwork? spayed/neutered or sterilized. because a dog who has had a vasectomy is considered to have been sterilized, no?

all i sent with mushroom's PAL paperwork was a copy of his latest rabies certificate which says he's a neutered male, and that bit highlighted. they took it.

i am actually quite grateful that steve's pants cover his business because people get all kinds of weird about dogs having testicles. holy smokes, that boy has nutties (ok only one)! the horror! the horror!

The following must be submitted with a completed PAL/ILP application:

* Two recent and clear color photographs of the dog;
o one full front view showing the facial characteristics of the dog;
o one view showing the full side profile of the dog standing on a flat surface (not grass).

* Proof from a veterinarian that the dog has been spayed/neutered.

* A non-refundable $35.00 application fee.

A rabies certificate from a veterinarian where the dog is indicated a neutered would be acceptable proof.

Here's a question: If you perform a vasectomy on a dog, are they considered 'neutered' as far as licensing goes (i.e. many places charge more for intact dogs ...)?

I've never asked that before, so I don't know.

I'm still waiting for an email back from the akc. I suspect I won't get one till next week. They prob don't answer them over the weekend.

Speaking of 'neuticals'...here's a story that still cracks me up!

A handler is showing Standard Poodle...the dog is 9 months of age and is excused for having only one testicle.

Same dog, same handler, the dog is now 18 months of age, dog is excused for having 3 testicles ROFLMAO Ya think the guy wold have noticed the extra boy when he bathed and groomed!
