After making another topic, I herd my collie pup barking. I walked up to Codex's whelping box, where my pup had led me, and saw she had given birth! She wasn't expected to give birth for another week or so!!!

There are 7 puppies, all very cute and they seem healthy, though they are less than an hour old. Codex is feeding them, she seems realy tired.

Is there anything I can do to help her? My vet office is closed for the next three days because of a problem the vet (who is also a good friend of mine) is experiencing.

I've given her lots of water and been keeping an eye on her, but I'm worried she may have hurt herself. I just picked her up from the vets this morning after being attacked and nearly killed Saturday evening.

Any advice?

* Let me edit this because you might read it the wrong way *

My dog gave birth 6 days earlier than expected. She was recently attacked by a dog and was a hair from losing her life.

I know what I'm doing, I've bred dogs before, but never had such a big litter (8 pups - didn't see the other one) and Codex was attacked. I'm just looking for some pointers and stuff to make sure I don't screw this up and make sure the puppies have a happy life. ^^

How was your bitch attacked? Is Bonkers the father?

Well, I'm going to assume that you are working closely with your breeder, or that you have a breeding mentor... so you should be able to call and ask him/her every question... Also, you need to give your vet a call and bring them in to be seen.

You need to take the dam and her new litter to the vet to be checked out. That is routine after all deliveries.

Bonkers is not the father. o.o He's neutered, and Codex will be spayed after this litter.

I know I need to bring her into the vet along with the pups, I'm just trying to find a local vet that I can trust. Since my vet is closed, I wanna choose someone I can trust, not some crack-in-the-wood noob.

In case anyone is curious, here are the pups fur patters:
1. Blue Merle
2. Blue Merle Tan Point
3. Sable Merle Tan Point
4. Tri - Color
5. Tri - Color
6. Sable & White
7. Tri - Color
8. Sable & White (piebald)

I'm just going through my phonebook and I found someone I took my old Shiba Inu too a while back, so I'm going to book an appointment with them since I trust them.

Ah... I have an appointment for 3 PM today, so I best go get ready. ^^

Wow, I just typed up what happened in the past 20 minutes in one post. Huzzah!

I think saying that they ALL die, period is going a little far. They are a ton of work and are at a greater risk of dieing but I have seen early litters and they have all been healthy and happy. That was in a small breed even.

Chances are the puppies were whelped closer to the due date that she knows. Probably just a screw up on counting the days IMO.

Puppies born before day 56 of gestation have a very low survival rate. 58-60 days is considered normal.

Puppies born on day 52 (6 days early) die.

B. PREMATURE PARTURITION: Parturition before day 56 is considered premature. Note that late breedings result in whelping 58-60 days later.

- Usually fetuses are small, weak and do not survive.

- Note that premature parturition can be induced by accidental use of high doses of estrogens, or glucocorticoid treatment in late gestation.

- In Corgies and some miniature breeds, occurrence of premature parturition has been attributed to extreme variation in fetal sizes.

Of course this assumes that the person KNEW the due date. It is impossible to know the due date unless ovulation timing has been done. Many litters which are thought to be early are really not.

Gestation in bitches is SO SHORT, that even a FEW days early makes a huge difference in survival rates.

And just one more question: How many have ever had a bitch, in a whelping box, deliver 8 puppies without anyone noticing?

That is what probably happened

Not too many I would think. Most breeders notice hours or even days that they are going to be having puppies soon. Not to mention the amount of noise a cleaning mother makes and the puppies cries. It would be seriously hard not to notice. Unless she wasn't home.

I got there on her 4th pup. I feel realy guilty for not paying attention to her.

However, some of what Red said is true and some of it is not.

The vet said out of this litter, maybe on 3 or 4 will make it, if not less. They're incredibly small. I feel horrible for letting my baby have her first four without me paying attention, believe me.

Edit; she was attacked by my neighbour's 9 month old dane/rotty mix.

The thread about her attack is in General Dog Chat. The dog jumped into her yard (multiple times I think) and attacked her dogs....

IMO the injuries could have spurred whelping on. Maybe?

I do hope she and her puppies are okay. What's her name? (Registered name + titles)

It is. I was certain I'd need an eyedropper/syringe. I forgot to mention one of the pups died in the examination room at the vets. :(

But you can't save everyone, right? I'm trying not to get too attached because I know that one wasn't the last one. :(
