We just learned our furnace and heat pump are going to need to be replaced before this winter, to the tune of about more than a grand than we have in savings for this sort of thing.

My DH's car needs repairs that we've been putting off because I've been expecting my salary to double, but I just learned about two days ago it's actually going to be cut in half.

We both sat down and worked out our finances. We don't have any way to borrow the money for the furnace, but we have about a month before we absolutely have to have one put in, but that only puts us maybe a hundred to two hundred ahead of where we are now. We really have nothing of value to sell off, both of our computers are worth less than about 40 dollars, since they're so old, we don't own cameras, our gaming system came out in like 2000.

Anyway, this is a hard question to ask oneself, but at what point do you weigh the financial burden aside and just do the best you can for your animals, or do you try to find them a home more suited to their needs, who can care for them more adequately, and most importantly, afford everything their welfare requires?

I've been searching for a second job, but every time I show up for an interview with Indy, I get a polite, "we'll let you know" and I've gotten to the point that I can't NOT show up with her for an interview and then show up to work with a Service Dog. Even jobs working with animals, I just get refused or a "we'll call you back" and when I call back to inquire "the position has been filled"

It was at the point that before we knew about the furnace, I'd already decided to go back to school, to a trade school, and I have a job lined up once I graduate where they know and love Indy and have no problem with her coming to work there, I just have to get this diploma. It takes about two years of being a full time student.

Anyway. Looking at our finances, we can't afford to feed and house four dogs, especially if I'm in school full time, continuing to hold down the job I do have, for half the money I had before, and make bills, and take care of all of our dogs properly. We both feel that Jones would be better off in another home where he's not the fourth dog, where he's two or three (because he loves other dogs) and where he'll get the time and the care he deserves.

Jones is good with every dog he's ever met, including dogs that are jerks. He's unneutered, but I feel like it would be beneficial for him to finish growing before being neutered. He's had a limited puppy vaccination schedule, and I've put off his rabies shot until he's nearly a year old. He's fine with cats, overbearing pushy bitchy female dogs, overbearing pushy male dogs, he absolutely adores people, and seems to take more after the collie part of him than the Lab part of him. Though he is a huge goofball, and will do anything for a laugh. He's skilled in the art of reading other dogs body language, and is usually neutral upon meeting new dogs.

He's a dog park dog without a problem, though sometimes other dogs take offense to his balls, he never takes offense back. He's never started a fight, nor has he ever been in a fight. He doesn't like his nails clipped, but will stand for the dremel as long as you have treats or peanut butter. (I smear it on the door and get a foot done each time)

He doesn't have any bad habits except he's slightly anxious in the car, but he likes soothing music and modest mouse and will settle down. He rides in a crate or in a harness. He's crate trained, and will crate up at night without an issue. He did whine the first few nights he spent with my mom while we were out of town, but he adapts quickly to new situations. He will go and knock on the door, or bump the doorknob if he needs to go out, and he doesn't chew anything that isn't a dog toy.

He has a fantastic off switch and will settle down in the house with ease. He also has a magic coat where he never stinks. He never smells like a dog, and he never seems to need a bath. He walks on a easy walk harness just fine, and he's about 75 to 80 percent reliable off leash in an unfenced area.

I have plenty of pictures of him, many of which can be searched here on Chaz. I'm sure transport can be arranged, or I will beg or do something to get flight money for a flight to wherever he's going. I know that most people on Chaz are the kind of home that I want him to have. He's been started in nosework, and absolutely loves it. He's fantastic at it as well. He's at the point where he's finding hides at about head level in sealed containers. No odors have been introduced other than food. He's okay with water, but we've never gone to a lake with him, just a local creek, so I don't know if he'd dock dive. His front end is a little bit upright for agility, but that can be compensated for by correct training. And that may change, as his birthday is November 11th. He's not yet a year old, so I expect some changes to his structure, but nothing too incredibly drastic as to make him unable to do any sort of work. He's a sound dog and has never had an injury.

If anyone is interested, or may know someone who is, please pass him around. There are also plenty of pictures of him on my flickr account that can be passed around. If someone on Chaz is interested, please either post here, or PM me directly.

Sorry you're going through this... Jones sounds like he'd be a good fit with Riley, but then, he'd be fourth dog here and I'm not sure about Murph and Mick. They tend to be dog aggressive with other males.

For the financial stuff, I'm guessing you own a house? We own our house (relatively speaking) and have a home equity line that can be used for emergencies/home improvement. We still have an emergency fund, but the home equity line has come in handy a couple of times. You have to pay it back but there's no set payment and the interest is really low. You can deduct the interest on your tax return. If you don't have one, I'd think about applying for one...

I really love Jones, I SO wish I could take him. He sounds so much like Logan. Unfortunately, I'm at my limit :(

I am so sorry that you are having to go through this. It must have been a really hard decision to make!!

For those of us unfamiliar with Jones could you post a pic? I did a search, but could only see a stacked pic - and he's really adorable. He honestly sounds like a great dog. I am going to mention it to my significant other and I'll pass the word around to other people that might be looking.

Oh gosh, I'm really sorry. I have friends who are thinking about a dog but I'm not sure they're the right home. If you post something on the Chaz Facebook page I'll share it and see if I can get any interest though.

I'm just so sorry, it's not fair. I don't want to try and rub salt in the wound but is there anyway someone can house him for awhile till you guys get back on your feet?

I wish I wasn't at my limit of higher energy dogs and dealing with two cancer patient dogs because he really seems like my type of dog and I think he's stunning.

If you want to type up a bio (toy drive and things like that and post it with a picture on FB on public I'll share it for you!

I'm not CharlieDog, but I'm fairly confident that she won't be mad at me for sharing pictures.

These pictures all seem a bit old... he is not-as-puppy now.

Really old, he's taller than both those dogs now. He's, obviously, on the left.

How would you say he'd fare as a SD prospect? I know a couple of people looking.

I'm sorry you've had to make this decision. :(

I've already been in touch with friends and family. They all love him, we're a family of dog lovers, but they're either not in the right situation, or they wouldn't be able to give him the proper home and they know it.

He has minimal toy drive here, but Ozzy and Indy both rule the fetch games with an iron paw, so he's not developed a lot of interest in playing fetch. He will play tug with you all day long though, that's one of his favorite games.

Snark, we do own our own home, and I'll have to look into that. I'm not sure if we'd be eligible or not because our house was a foreclosure when we purchased it, and my DH would have to be the one to get the line, since the house is in his name.

I looked at getting a credit card, and putting the expense onto a credit card, but the highest credit limit I can get (never had a credit card before) is 500 dollars, which, while it would help, doesn't put us near where we need to be.

Jones would be happy as long as he's getting time and individual attention as an only dog. I think even just going to the dog park would be good with him if he was the only dog in the home, as long as he was getting one on one time with his people. He's a fantastic cuddler, and while he's excited in a new environment, He settles down within an hour and will go to sleep if nothing exciting is happening.

These are all not the best pictures of him, because they were first on instagram and then facebook and I took them off of FB so the quality is definitely sucking. I would go outside and just take more of him, but it's raining today, of course, so that will have to wait.

ETA, I also wanted to say that wherever he goes, he will always be welcome back here. I know that's slightly incongruous, but I don't want to place him somewhere, only to have him bounced around from home to home and I lose track of where he's gone, I would like to know he's doing well, and is happy at whatever he's doing (though I can't imagine Jones ever being sad or depressed, lol) and if it's not working out where he's been placed, I will either collect him somehow, or set up a transport either back to me, or to a more carefully screened home. My worst nightmare is placing him and then losing track of where he is.

I'm really, really sorry :( I know how much you love him. Someone is going to get a great dog, he sounds absolutely perfect and he's grown up into such a handsome man! Hope you find just the best home for him.

How much have you shopped around on the furnace? When I was looking at replacing mine, I was originally quoted about $6000 (gas, high efficiency, can't go lower efficiency because it's vented through PVC). That was a daunting sum, but the repair guy suggested I look into the Goodman brand instead, which they didn't carry. It's a considerably less expensive brand, and then I was able to find someone to do the work who does that kind of thing as a side income. Guy that used to work at the mill where I work now. He installed a new Goodman furnace for me for $2400. I had to put up with a lecture about taking better care of my house, but for that kind of savings, it was worth it.

This may not resolve the longterm issue of whether you should place Jones, but it might make your life a little easier if you find that there could be a less expensive option for your heating system.

We've found about the cheapest system we can get away with for our house and still keep our homeowners insurance on it. It's going to cost about what you said, around 2400 dollars. Then we have to get a licensed HVAC technician to install it, and I've gotten quotes for just the installation and they're not terrible. One guy I spoke with was very nice, said he could bring a small crew and have the whole thing done in a couple hours.

If our homeowners didn't insist on the licensed part, my father would install it for us, but for some reason they want to make sure it's done correctly and they said they may have someone inspect it. I think it was our mistake to call them and see if they would cover the cost of a new one. :/

And today my husbands car finally had a checkup. The brakes master and slave cylinder are going out and the ABS has already given up the ghost. I didn't get the estimate from him, but he didn't sound happy about it over the phone. :/

For those of you on FB, I made an Album, Linds was kind enough to copy a bio onto it, SizzleDog, Sael and Linds have already shared it, so if any of you are friends with them it should be easy to find!

Thank you guys so much. It's making a really hard decision easier knowing that so many people care about a dog they've never met before, and care about making sure he gets into a fantastic home. So really, thank you. Thank you.

At least one of my friends has shared it as well, so it's getting out there! This particular friend happens to live in the PNW where there's a LOT of collie people, so maybe something will turn up :)

Chaz didn't let me down when I found Tango a home. I mean, he just got a hand-crocheted custom one-leg-holed sweater. So as much as it hurts to part with him, I think an awesome fit will come along.

I shared this on facebook as well and already have one friend that has shared it and she is friends with a ton of dog people as well. The right home will come along. I mentioned him to my dad as well. They are starting the process of looking for another dog right now since their last dog passed away. They are more of a one dog kind of living situation and my step mom was asking me about collies and collie mixes just last week actually. They live right near two different dog parks both of which I tend to frequent as well. Not 100% positive just how ready they are for another dog yet since their last one passed away, but I definitely mentioned it to my dad just in case. Whatever dog they end up with will more than likely get to go with me to work every so often as well since I work at a dog daycare ten minutes from where my parents live.
