i just ran to petsmart with one of my friends and i tookyoshi with me and we went through with no problem. when i was in line to check out this lady was there with her yorkie and she checked out and left. while she had been there the cashier lady had stood and doted on her dog. when i got up to the front she was like 'what kind of dog is that?' motioning toward yoshi. and i was like 'well she's a mix i got her from the animal shelter.' and then she goes 'oh well i bet you wish you had a pure breed dog instead of a second hand dog after seeing that yorkie don't you?' gah it made me so mad i just paid and walked off and didn't say anything

So sad..... for shallow people purebred dogs=status symbols.

I love the look of a purebred dog, I admit that, but I value the companionship of dogs more than anything else.

Ya know.... as I think about it... I might just complain to the manager of that store if I were you. Petsmart is supposed to be pro-rescue. I am sure they wouldn't want their employees disparaging rescued animals.

What a jerk!! It's none of her business what kind of dog you have, and mutts happen to be excellent dogs. I have a purebred dog, and I love her to death, I love the breed (I love my girl best though), but I also have two mutts and I love them to death too. They're all wonderful companions and I love 'em.

How rude!! It reminds me of the time I went to petsmart to get my rottie a prong collar. In the process of putting the colar in the plastic bag, the bag got caught on the colar and it ripped open. The cashier says... "what an evil thing!". Now that made me mad. The employees can be rude at times!!

Ahhh another idjut member of this so called human race.

I understand your anger, but you know what I would do?

I would ignore what was said, look into my mutt's eyes and say to him, you are beautiful just how you are.

She unfortunately probably doesn't know the true love that a dog can give, but rather its heritage or title. That makes for a very shallow, sad person

You and your dog are better than that. Lift your head high and treat her and her comments as insignificant :)

grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr !!!

That's just awful. I would have asked for the manager right there and explained how the rude and ignorant employee had offended you and cost his store the sale - loudly, and not given them any trade....

Or maybe you should have said OK I'll take the bet- $500, then told her she'd lost and to pay up!

The whole concept referring to a dog as 'second hand' like that - especially to a caring owners face - stinks - aren't dogs about caring, companionship etc not fashion items, status possesions, $$$ etc ???

Well, you know mutts are worthless. The only good dog is a purebred.

That was sarcasim by the way.

I would have told the manager, get her in trouble. There was NO excuse for what she said to you.

You should call the manager right now. I would have set her straight. Just because that dog is a Yorkie and he's cute doesnt mean anything really. Theres a lot more to a dog than whether is purebred. I guess it doesnt matter to most people whether its a brother/sister pup or not. Thats just sick to me. I have a purebred cocker, and a i have a jackapoo (Aka mut) I love both of them.

OMG, how rude was that?!?! I would have spat back, "my dog is the best dog in the world and excuse me if I saved a poor soul from a shelter, and I don't care about how much I paid for my dog!" That is just so rude...I bet she would have thought that my two mutts were absolutly worthless then because we didn't pay a dime for them! Because quality=price, you know? *sarcasm*

here is what i would have said..come on folks you get more flies with honey...."really well i bet you wouldnt' think that way if you just knew my dog a little better.(smile and laff a little) .i tell you she is just a miracle on 4 paws.(beaming look of appriciation of my little dog) .i have never owned such an easy dog to train.(demonstrate latest learned tricks) .etc etc etc ..until the clerk learned something. Then maybe becuase you didn't try to put her down..or make her have a bad day, or punish her for being ignorant, you might have..

1 opened her mind a little
2 she might have enlightened her co workers..u know the neatest little dog
came thru my line today! ANd
to think she adopted it from
a kill sheter.....................
THat is what i would have done..and i bet you two things
one her earlier statement might never be repeated

and she might just spread the word..i can almost totally bet on that.

why why why why must you all be so negative all the time:(

Ya know, smkie, you're quite right!!! It's so easy to get angry - so difficult to remain calm and actually try to educate someone :p

I will definitely try to remember that next time I might be able to use it :)

thanks..Victor thanks you too! he is a two time rescue sos dog...we will be doing the humane society fund raiser on tv march 12. I never ever waste the opportunity to say how grateful i am to petsaver.com and Connie guthrie with save_our_strays! She kept track of the kill shelters and who is about to be pts. She drives there and takes them to her own kennel, at a huge amount of self sacrifice and overload of work she tries to get them adoptable or give them more time. SHe saved Victor, he would be very dead if it wasn't for her, and so would the 100+ that she and her team have saved, she is now i St. Louis continuing her good works. And he Is a miracle on 4 paws. He looks like a pure bred and he very well might be, but it wouldn't matter if he was one thousand percent mixed heritage, i would say and do exactly the same thing. I have spent a lot of time working with the public in the past so it comes a little easier for me to think in this way, especially when working with young dog owners and people that are not as experienced with animals as i am.
I had a little pet rat once i called her the ambassador of Good Will for All Rodents. She was so smart and loving, even my sister in law that gets horrors from the mere thought of a rat let her in her house.
JUst if people would think for a second before they react, that there is always another approach to any situation, and taking a more positive route will almost always get the better result. The clerk wont be mad and go home and snap at the kids because she got yelled or made to feel bad about work, she will go home and tell them a story about this neat little dog..
