A couple of years ago we bought our two Doxies each a BIG smoked hambone (don't know if it was knuckle) at Petco. We very nearly lost Amy. She's a strong chewer and was able to chip off little pieces of the bone...lots of them apparently. They clogged up her intestines and nothing would pass through. We took her to the vet the very next morning and they started giving her enemas trying to clean her out. With all the vomiting and such her electrolytes took a nosedive and she nearly died, because there was only so much of that they could give her at one time.

She spent one night at the emergency vet's and a couple of days at the regular vet's. It cost us $1200 to get her well, and she still had a long recovery at home. Her poop was mostly blood for several days. It was awful. My husband fed her little bits of food from his fingers because that's the only way she would eat and the vet said it was imperative to get her to eat. We had to feed her every half hour the first day.

Willie is quite small (10 pounds or a little under) and not a strong chewer but he still got a bacterial infection from his bone.

If you read the fine print on those bones it says not to give them to big dogs, but you'd think they'd be safe for a 14 pound Dachshund.

Needless to say, I wouldn't buy those again.

So smoked knuckles are ok?

Also, are the bones big? Becauce the ones at the store are not that big, about MAYBE 5" long.

I give the Horsemen smoked knuckles all the time (under supervision, of course). They absolutely love them. I think they're much safer than the whole shank bones. The knuckles don't splinter...they kind of grind down into little crumbles as the dog gnaws.

But once you see the dog has gnawed off the crumbly end (you can tell, because there's basically nothing but a single hard bone left), I throw them away. I find they last a fairly long time, too. Certainly longer than bully sticks and other chews I've tried! I suggest getting the largest one you can find.

Okay, that makes me feel a lot better :) Yeah, I gave the dogs some Rib Bones today, and they just crumbled as they would bite it ;) I really liked that.

Oh they are under TOTAL supervision when they have ANY kind of treat/bones.

Are you people serious? This a real, live account of the danger of those things and you still don't hesitate?

They're cooked bones. Roasted, smoked, however you cook them, they're cooked! Not as safe as raw bones and not safe at all without supervision.

First, she/he only has 4 posts.

Second, I said they are ALWAYS under TOTAL SUPERVISION!

And third, with ANY RMB you worry, with ANY bone or new food, or treat you worry.

And I know that Cooked bones are not ok, but is a Smoked bone cooked? << I know probably crazy question.

I have had no problems with knuckle bones that crumble. But my golden retriever cracked a molar on a raw shank bone.

I'm no expert, but that's my personal experience. If I saw my dogs taking off splinters or big chunks, I would take the knuckle away.

Someone with 4 posts can't have a real, credible story? Someone with a high post count should be more believable? There are a lot of BS'ers on this forum who have high post counts who I wouldn't take seriously if my life depended on it.

Well guys, I know you don't know me, and that's fine. I'm glad for an opportunity to tell my story again. I told everybody I could think of at the time it happened, including some other message forums. You can take it for whatever its worth to you.

If I had been giving my dogs these bones for years and had no problems I might not stop either. I'm sure all the bones aren't alike and all dogs certainly aren't alike either. But if I had never given those bones before I would hesitate before I took a chance like that.

I do supervise my dogs when I give them treats. But there's no way to see every single piece that goes down a dog's throat. I saw them in an x-ray. And even the dog who couldn't chew pieces off got sick from his bone. I wish I could remember the brand name to tell you, but it has been over two years now and I can't.

Did these come from a petstore? Like Petsmart.

Ah, well I will continue to look for non-smoked ones.

I agree. Smoked is cooked. It makes them brittle and therefore, a real risk.

I happen to know Doxieluvr and whether she's made 1 post or 5000, she is one person whom I respect highly. She is someone who I personally know has integrety and a true love of dogs. She is just flat out true blue and down to earth. She would never steer you wrong. That was a frightening and traumatic experience for her little Amy.

That said, I too, have had a near fatal episode with one of my Chihuahuas with a pig's ear. These things....I don't care if they're rawhide in any form, Greenies, smoked bones....they are not digestable for a lot of dogs, big or small. They can get stuck in the intestines and cause death. I wish they'd all be taken off the market. If these injuries and deaths had occured in children, you bet these products would be taken right off the shelves. Somehow, our society doesn't take dogs' lives very seriously.

Just because a dog gets by with no remarkable medical events, does not mean that you're not taking a considerable risk. There's always a first time for everything. Risks are part of life anyhow. Why overtly add more?

Thanks Doberluv! You are truly a LUV! And you are so right about those products.

I told the vet that we thought those bones were safe because they came from the pet store. He told me I'd be amazed at how many dogs he sees who got sick from something that came from the pet store.

Thanks Doxie.

Yes, it's just like with human products. People assume that just because they're in the grocery store, they're good for you. Or just because they're "natural" (herbs) they're good for you. Baloney! They can write whatever they want on these packages. That does not make them true. What it does do, is make money for the companies. That's their main concern, not the safety of your pet. The safety of our pets has to come from our own investigations, experiences, experiences of others (and there have been many like this) and our own common sense.
