Lucy's ears smell bad...*really* bad. Is this an indication that there is something that needs to be treated? I do recall the breeder saying it looked like the puppies had ear mites, but she wasn't 100% sure, but treated them for it anyway.

I have noticed that she scratches around her ears a lot, at first my mom thought fleas but now that I think about it I'm leaning more towards the ear mites...

Also taking into consideration that we have 3 other animals in the house, should we make a vet appointment for her? She has an appt. on May 10th to get her shots but I don't know if we should wait until then to get her ears checked out, or make one for an earlier date?

Mites or ear infection, it's best to get it treated now! Don't make her suffer any more and don't take the risk of her hearing becoming damaged because of it!

Thanks, just wanted some opinions. Don't worry, we won't make her wait that long...my mom and I were talking about this earlier today, but we were only going by the fact that her ears smell. I'll bring it up to her tomorrow morning, and I'm sure by the time I get home from school, she'll have an appt. scheduled. :)

It sounds like an ear infection...Zoe had a little inflamation in her ear once it was scratching and twitching a little ointment the vet gave a couple times a day for a week and she was good.

I kept asking everyone and they was like if it smells bad it is probably an ear infection, but hers never got that bad. She only had a little pink you had to see with the magnifying thing.

Dogs that have floppy ears are more prone to ear infections. Its a VERY distinct smell as well. So from what you described I'd say it was an infection.

Eat Mites you'dnotice little black things in the ear and it wouldn't smell foul.

Might want to get your babe to the vet as soon as possible so she doesn't have to feel icky anymore :)

Thanks!

Now a question about vets lol. My mom made the shot appt. on Monday, and the earliest opening they had was at the end of next week. Since it's now Friday, I'm willing to bet that those openings are no longer open--meaning we probably wouldn't be able to get her in until May anyway.

Would it be worth it at all to see if we can get her in to the Banfield vet at Petsmart earlier? I really have no idea at all if that's an okay place to take them...but I'd really like to get her to the vet the earliest we can.

your vet may get you in sooner if you explained it isn't just a shot appt., but rather a concern for an ear infection. mine takes you immediately cause once the pain sets in, it's really bad. as mentioned, a prescription creme clears things up in a week. I'd try anywhere sooner than May. :)

I dont see what would be wrong with a petsmart vet for a ear infection, but try talking to your vet first. You really need to get it delt with your dog is in alot of disomfort. This comming from the owner of a dog who in VERY prone to them

She went to the vet today. I told my mom about it before I went to school, I come home and she tells me she has an appt. at 3:30 lol. It was the Banfield vet--which was more convenient, because we had to get some things at Petsmart anyway.

It's an ear infection. A *really* bad one, apparently. So, for 2 weeks, twice daily we have drops to put in her ears, and every other day we are supposed to clean them.

Poor girly though, she's having a tough time getting comfortable, every few minutes she gets up and shakes her head. Hopefully this clears fast and doesn't become a common thing for her.

Thanks for the help. :)

Remember. Make sure you go to the Vet they day you stop. They may not have told you this but if the infection isnt quite gone when you stop the drops then it will just keep comming back so make a apointment for the day you stop giving the drops to be sure. It will save you money in the long run.
