What about Chihuahuas and mini/toy poodles?
Luna's a chi and she hardly barks. I'm really sensitive to barking - can't STAND it - and she's never really bothered me about barking. Unless someone's at the door, which is a good thing. When I first got her she wouldn't STOP barking if she thought someone was at the door, but it was pretty easy to teach her "quiet." I'd say most of the chis I've met haven't been big barkers, but of course it depends a lot on training.

Schnauzers and shelties are the WORST when it comes to barking, IMO. But then again, it does depend on training... if you allow it, that's what you're going to get.

I don't blame the breed , I blame the owner !
It's easy to say that until you have a breed like a sheltie... It's just a breed trait. It was required in their work to be very loud and vocal. It's very much ingrained into what the breed is. Shelties really are a special kind of loud.

When I did flyball the whole team was shelties except for Izzy. It was very very VERY loud hour each week :lol-sign:

That said, Frodo never shuts up. Corgis tend to be very vocal with a wide range of sounds. A lot of Frodo's noise is due to lack of training, but holy jeebus...
Next dog I would prefer much quieter :p

I try not to label barking as a breed characteristic as it really depends on each dog. Some breeds though, are more prone to alert than some, and by alert I mean of which a dog hears a noise and starts barking.

If the schnauzers hear someone at the door, or people going by on bikes/walking/etc. when outside, yes they will bark, until the person is out of site. But they are also very protective of me, the other dogs, and the house. If someone comes inside Kiba will continue barking a bit (something we're working on) but she shuts up once I tell her it is okay, but Stryder doesn't bark at them.

I also have a toy poodle, that alert right along with the schnauzers, but not when people come inside, she's a bit wary, but doesn't bark. And the mini poodle, never barks. When he barks I know there's something up that needs to be checked on.

I don't think of only small dogs when I think of dogs that bark all day. I have neighbors who used to have a pit mix and a rottie. They would bark their fool heads off all day and go completely nuts if someone passed by on the street. They no longer have these dogs but now have a dobie. It barks all day as well. We also have neighbors with two doxies. They bark when you pass, but I don't hear them otherwise. We never hear the other neighbor's Sheltie or the labradoodle next door.

Xena (38 pounds, 23 Inches) barks like a mad woman when the neighbors come home. I tell her "ok, enough" and she calms down. For the most part, though, she doesn't bark 'all day'.

Barking ALL day has a lot to do with training and amount of exercise and mental stimulation. We had multiple shelties and none ever barked day in and day out. With those types of dogs I find they are very easy to get started barking- anything mildly exciting would set the shelties off. But then you can pretty easily stop them too.

The worst around us is this family that breeds beagles. Their dogs bark all the time.

To be honest, Rory is way more vocal than the chihuahuas.

The chihuahuas will bark if someone comes to the door, or they hear a strange noise from outside. Outside, they'll bark if they hear someone but are quick to quiet down.

most people say chihuahuas are a barky bunch. My show friends thought so also until they came to my house they walked up the driveway and didn't hear a peep. Knocked on the door and got a couple of barks but then they settled down and once they walked in the swore I didn't have Chihuahuas because they are so quite and calm. They didn't believe me until they came over and spent some time with me and my bunch. Again I had this happen when I was at a dog show camping and one of my neighbors had Min-Pins and they saw I had Chihuahuas and said oh good my dogs won't be the only barking small dogs in this loop. The next day she walked up to me with my dogs in their ex-pen which surrounded my 10x10 ez-up and said oh my god your dogs are so quite. I'd swear you didn't have Chihuahuas if I didn't see them out playing in the pen! I told her I don't tolerate excesive barking of any kind. Just because they are small doesn't mean they can't have manners. I agree it all depends on how you train them.

My roommate had a doxie mix, chi mix, and a pug. The chi was the worset barker. Followed my the doxie and finally the pug. Pug wasn't very loud. My dog (Papillon) is a more annoying barker than all three put together.

Yappers beget yappers. It's true for just about any breed and bloodline. It's similar to temperament being partially genetic. The more nervous and sharp the dog the more likely they will be a chronic yapper. Pick mellow and confident and you'll have a much quieter home for the average small breed.

As far as small dogs with big yaps in my experience it depends a lot upon the breeder. I have a friend with papillons who has a line of yap machines, I have four papillons and only one I consider a yapper and one that I have to prompt to get any noise out of at all. I take this as a sign of what breeders are willing to put up with plus environmental factors like training, and how settled the home is, etc.
