What small bred dogs do you consider "yappy"? Dogs who will bark all day if the neighbors are having work done on their house or if someone is jogging by the house.
What small breeds do you consider quiet? Dogs that might bark when someone is at the door but otherwise stay quiet.

I just don't know as much about small breeds as I want to, so would appreciate the info, thanks!

I have 3 & All bark when people pass the yard when there out. Normally i can shut them right up Unless the people bother them.
I think it depends on how there trained I like my dogs letting me know some is here.

oh, should have been more specific, if they're outside and they bark when someone passes it's not a big deal, I mean when they're inside and they hear or see someone outside the window and then they don't stop until the person is out of sight.

Pomeranians are SO barky. Like, worse than shelties. And collies, and standard poodles put together.

Zach's parent's dachshund is SO barky, but I think that's mainly a training issue.

Maltese are usually pretty quite.

If someone has keys yes but regular people most of the time no. My dogs have a few people That they Completely dislike so. :/
It really depends on how you train them My neighbors lab & golden sit in the window barking at everything Seriously Even at car's passing sometimes. They can sit there all day Barking.
Out of all 3 of mine my Yorkie is the "yappiest" But he is the protective one He has to protect his mommy & brother's. My silky Doesn't bark at all Unless he hears something in the yard at night Then he brings out his Deep Mastiff bark.

The Pug I had was not barky at all. He let us know AFTER someone knocked on the door, but that was about it. He barked/growled when someone entered the backyard without informing us first.

I was pretty sure he would alert me if someone were trying to break in, etc., but he rarely barked because someone was walking by.

I knew one other Pug, and she didn't bark much either.

My Pug and Shih Tzu very rarely bark at all
When I had a Min Pin, he began barking at people through the window when he was about a year old, but he didn't do it all day long or anything and it was no big deal

Yeah, pugs generally don't bark much. Havanese, either. Some yorkies I know bark SO much but some hardly bark at all, I think that's an individual/training issue.

Really the only "yappy" breed I think of is Pomeranian. I'm sure it can be somewhat controlled by training but they really are just a yappy breed.

Also, the three or so french bulldogs I know bark A LOT.

Romeo is a chi and rarely barks at all..except when the doorbell rings
this is true with most chis I meet. except for those few crazy ones with absolutely ZERO training

most popular barky dog ive seen? Id say Min Pin or Pom. but ive met quite a few well trained ones who aren't

Id say a few breeds are more prone to bark, but with the right training early on. id say its an easy fix

Thanks for the input everyone!
What about Chihuahuas and mini/toy poodles?
I have a toy poodle mixed with something or another, but she's really not too bad about the barking. She'll bark when someone comes into the house but only until she finds out who it was (even if its stranger, just seeing their face makes her stop barking.) She'll also bark if someone is walking by our house outside but she'll stop if either a.) I tell her to hush or b.) that person pets her. Other than that, she's not much of a barker.

Don't know a lot of toy poodles but one I met kept barking the whole half hour I was there, and the owner said it was common and she usually barked most all day long.

My cavalier does not bark, if he counts for a small breed. The only times he barks is when playing with a particular rubber toy, and on rare occasions for attention, but he always stops when we tell him to. Not a chance that he'd bark to alert us of anything, not even when someone's at the door.

Papillons depend... Rose never ever barks unless there is something very worth barking about but Mia barks at the drop of a hat. In general papillons are very possessive and protective of their owner and home and will readily sound a warning when they think they need to.

Every morning we have to show Mia that the people walking around the house before I get up are okay. The only times Rose barks is when there is another dog in our yard.

I wouldn't call them yappy like a sheltie but they are pretty vocal at times. No one ever approaches the house without us knowing, though. :p

we have a single registered treeing feist (half treeing feist, half beagle) who is totally silent unless she's approached by someone she doesn't know on a tether, or the coonhounds start barking first. even then, she has a "big girl bark" thank GOD.

my biggest coonhound is actually the worst... she barks or snarks at EVERYTHING and is a giant PITA.

minpins are my vote for barkiest... and shelties... though through our dog training club I've met a few that rarely bark, and we have a lady that runs poms and I've never heard a peep from them - totally depends on the training. i babysat a lady's chis (like 15 of them) and they bark CONSTANTLY, but outside the show ring they really don't have much training or social skills.

When I first moved in here, the guy behind us had a min pin he kept in the yard all day (with access to the patio.) He left for work at 7 a.m. Dog started barking at 7:01. He got home at 6 p.m. Dog stopped barking at 6:01.

And he worked 6 days a week...

Shelties are so LOUD. I have yet to meet one that wasn't a yappy dog. Sure, they can be trained to stop on command but I have never met one that doesn't have a desire to yap yap yap.
