Since I'm on such a hound kick lately, which are your favourites?

One of my best friends and her family are big into deer hunting (actually I know quite a few who do, some with bows but most with guns and dogs) If you ever want to chat deer hunting with dogs let me know and I can get you in touch with her.
Most people use mixed dogs. Their best hunter was a hound GSD cross, I don't think any of them use a purebred. Heck I have heard someone's shihtuzu made it up to the camp and hunted well with the hounds lol. The JRTs I got my stock from got their kennel name from the hubby's hunt camp. And yes some of the JRTs were used on the deer hunt.
The local hunt club (tally ho off to the hounds type) always have hounds looking for homes if you ever want a failed foxhound.

I have always wanted to learn to use a bow, but my parents wouldn't let me join the archery club when I was younger. My mom said it wasn't safe for someone like me.
I wouldn't mind a failed hunter either.
Ry thinks I'm trying to turn him into a southern redneck because I've been looking at hounds on petfinder. I played with some Beagles in the building, it brought back the hounds we had growing up. There's a little foxhound mix I always see here too. He's almost too cute. I've been trying to show Ry that not all Beagles, and any hound dog for that matter, are fat little meat rolls.

down south we mostly use foxhounds & beagles for running deer. we even have a type of oversized beagle bred for it.
i know a fair number of guys sit in the truck listening, but you don't have to. predators & furbearers that tree usually involve a lot more activity on foot from the dog handler. using running hounds on fox, coyote or deer by yourself will require fast driving, hard running & fast good shooting (camera or gun is up to you).

Yeah, my family always had foxhounds and coonhounds, and a few setters and setter crosses. We also had a Feist, Pointers, and a Brittany. Seems like an odd assortment thinking back on it.
Other than July and Trigg, what are some other hounds used? Now I'm just looking to feed curiosity, mostly. Got plenty of time to think on anything for the future, too.

running walkers & deer/fox beagles are most common down south for deer & for fox/coyote competition hunting. the other field "strains" of american foxhound are goodman & croghan (hard to find nowadays). there are a couple of strains common w/ the social hunts (red jackets & such), pennmarydel is the only one i can think of off the top of my head.

I would really like to have a Coonhound or a Ridgeback, but with my walking issues, the next dog/dogs will probably be on the smaller side. Young adults probably past the housebreak stage. King and Molly were so easy to housebreak, any pup I would likely get would be a nightmare in comparison. I think back to Gus, my Pit Bull mix, and my stomach turns over. Almost a year and a half of squatting in the house before he "got it". Took Molly a couple of days, and King about two weeks to be pretty much 100%.
The hounds that my family members have owned drove me nuts! Great dogs, all had wonderful happy temperaments, but they are not for me. I could live with a sighthound though, all the greyhounds I have met I would take in a heartbeat. I also like whippets and the looks of borzois but I don't really know a great deal about them other than they are purdy
