So at my last visit to the cafeteria around 3 to have coffee with Kevin
there was an intern (company employs college kids for summer help to get their feet wet) in the cafe talking about his new shepard pup. He was saying it will not quit digging up the yard. I mentioned that I had heard filling up the holes with the dogs own pooh and topping it with dirt is supposed to stop it, at least in that spot. Told him didn't know for sure because I had never tried it.

Anywhoo, he said that sounded like something to try and I wished him luck. Then he started talking about his pup not liking his food........this time he looked directly at me, so of course I was compelled to ask what the food was. "Kibbles & Bits" he says I told him there were better foods out there and he may want to look into something without corn or by products.

Then he says what would I recomend? I tell him I used to feed Canadae and as of right now it was not on any recall list. I also told him Solid Gold was another one that I used to use and was happy with.

Kevin has went back to his office and I am alone at my table.............

So by now we have an audience that has stopped their conversations and is listening intently.

He then asks "Used to? Well what do you feed now?" to which I answer honestly "homecooked food"..........Well one of the more loud opinionated woman at his table said "Oh, you mean you mix table scraps in the dog food?"

"No" I said, "I buy ingredients for the dogs and make big pots of food for them then freeze it"

She looked at me for a minute.........then a wide grin spread across her face, then she actually laughed at me! :( and of course more people joined in............

I felt horrible sitting there all red faced and alone............I don't even know why it should bother me because I love my dogs and want to do the best I can do..............but it didn't feel very good none the less :(

oh coop---you have to consider your audience! And does this woman have any animals? I think you gave this young guy something to think about--and you may even want to follow up with him later to say that while some people may not care about their pets, you do and you'd be happy to give him further info. You did a good thing--don't be hard on yourself!

Don't let people get you down - have strength in your own ideals!

To be honest, people laugh at what they don't understand, or are afraid of.

I'd have just told them to ****** off, and they'd be smiling on the other side of theirs faces when they saw my dog(s).

If these people knew anything about dogs they would appluad you for what your doing.

Keep your chin up and just know that your dogs are getting the best care and yummiest food a dog could get.

Aw Coop. Don't you know you can't help people when it comes to stuff like this? They ask for advice and then, if it means more than dumping the cheapest thing they can find in a dish, you lose them.

You should have told her that SOMEBODY has to spend money at Vet's offices, so it might as well be her and not you.

Coop....YOU know what you're doing. YOU have forgotten more about dogs than that ***** will ever know. SO.....you can feel good about that. Feel good about yourself. You have so much going for you that you don't need ****es like that for approval. Who cares what some dumb *** like that thinks? Don't even tamper with allowing anyone who you don't care about get to you. And you couldn't POSSIBLY care about that *****. You take great care of your dogs.

You could have told her that it's just such a great thing *sarcastic* that she and others like her are supporting these wonderful companies who turn around and kill their dogs with poisoned food. Who else but cheapskates would keep them in business?

In fact, I might pm you or maybe you can make a thread in the food forum exactly what concoctions you make. I'm sort of doing half way home cooked and Lyric needs a sort of modified diet for his liver disease. But the other 3 dogs could eat a regular diet.

OK....I put in the **** all by myself. I didn't evey type the bad words and rely on the automatic thing. So there. LOL.

Thank you ALL very much for your kind words..........it means alot.

I have never tried to push any certain food or way of feeding on any other pet owner........I don't like to see/hear others doing it either. I will offer advice or opinions if I am asked..........but I don't even want to do that anymore now.

Awww, that is awful :(

I always have people make fun of me for the things I do for my dogs... it's sad that more people don't feel the same way we do about our pets.

Don't stop giving advice, though... try not to care about what others think.

maybe they just don't understand how great it is to cook for your dogs and see them actually enjoy it as opposed to them eating canned innards?

This is why I LOVE Chazhound. It's so difficult to find people in real life that want to make sure they're doing all that's best for their dog. I do have some of my clients that do get it though and it's nice to have great conversations with them.

Keep doing the awesome job you are for your dogs and don't ever feel ashamed especially when it comes to ignorant people. Who knows, some of those chuckling people might of been chuckling on the outside but you may have sparked new questions about their dogs nutrition on the inside.

Again, thank all you guys for understanding. Today was a much better day all the way round.

The intern I was talking to yesterday actually came to my office today to find me (since I didn't really want to be back in the cafe today) He said he put pooh in several of the holes, and googled about dog food!! I was trying not to let him see that inside I was doing the "happy joy joy dance" hehehehe

We didn't go into great detail about his findings, but the mere fact that he did it tickled me. I think he wanted to come let me know as a way of saying he felt bad for what the lady had done the day before. (which was not his fault)

But Yahoooo, at least my humiliation was not in vain :)

When people like that get me down I just remember that the majority of people in the world are idiots and she is one of them. Then I move on.

I home cook now and I can see the difference in my dogs.
