Hi everyone,

I took my puppy to the vet today because he started having bad poo's shall we say and she says that it might be the change in food that has been doing it or the treats, he has always had soft poo's but nothing like this, this isnt even a poo its just mush, sorry if thats to much information, its got me worried.

She said he had a small temp and gave him an injection and has given me anti-biotics to give him, once 3 times a day and also food to help his stomach.

Ive to keep an eye till he is suppose to be back for his second injection in a weeks time.

Im very worried about him, more because Im a new mummy to this pup and have no experience with this type of animal, Im just worried Ive done something wrong thats given him this.

Tonight Ive put a soft blanket in his cage to cuddle in with that hopefully will give him some comfort, but he wants to just chew on it, Im wondering will this cause him to choke or anything, he seems to love it, but is going through a rip his papers and cage to shreds and I cant seem to get him to stop it..

Sorry for so many questions, just pretty worried..

If he's still eating/drinking on his own, and not vomiting then the diarrhea very likely could be due to the food. When an animal is introduced to a new food it sometimes takes time for them to adjust to it. Is it a new food/treat for him?

In regards to the chewing, he is most likely teething. How old is he?

To discourage chewing on the blanket try giving your puppy something else to chew on such as a nylabone or a kong toy.

Asking questions shows that you care about your pup's well being. Nobody minds that :)

He probably doesn't really need the blanket... he must not be feeling THAT bad if he's chewing it up! And it could be really bad for him if he swallows pieces of it, you might want to just take it out.

What kind of food was he eating before and what food is he eating now? What breed/age is he?

I'm actually having the same issue with my 9 1/2 wk old pup, Charlee. We got her at 8 wks.. the breeder was feeding her puppy chow, but since we've done well with Natural Choice for our rottie, we slowly changed her over to that brand instead. I've been keeping an eye on her poos which have been consistently soft, but within the last day or so she seems to be having very mild diarrhea at times. I assume it's a combination of her treats (we give her pup-peroni training treats) and adjusting to her food.. but I'm taking her in on saturday to check it out. She's eating/drinking just fine and not vomiting, so I'm relieved to know that it's probably not too serious. Cross your fingers for her!

Hope your pup is doing alright, lucid. :(

When I got Cooper at the Humane Society he was OK for a while. We attended puppy kindergarten and his brother was in the same class with us (Thomas) and his mom said that Thomas is on medication because he had bad diarrhea. She asked if Cooper was good. We said yes. That week Cooper has the tomtits (diarrhea) and I searched high and low from the internet and tried canned pumpkins, chicken cooked with the rice then cubed. Nothing changed for two days I was getting frustrated and annoyed. Then I saw a post about pepto-bismol. The poster said it solved her puppy's tomtits within 24 hour. I gave about .5 mil to Cooper because he was less than 10 weeks at the time. It sure did the miracles for him. I keep a bottle and a medicine dropper in my car and in my pantry and upstairs nowadays...never be without it.

When my Dixie was a pup and went in for her parvo vaccination, she got the runs. It was solid water, explosive and smelled the worst you could ever imagine. I rushed her back to the vet after finding her up to her knees wading in brown water. Come to find out that the Parvo vaccine is actually like a strong dose of Parvo to immunize her, and she just reacted to it like she had parvo. I guess in a sense, it was parvo.

Like humans-the mumps and chicken pox vaccine, and flu- and many more are actually doses of the disease to build your immunity to it.

It passed in a few days. The main thing is to make sure he stays hydrated.

The human flu vaccine (I don't know about others, but I know this one) is actually not a live flu virus. It's a virus with the DNA removed - so to your body it "looks" like a virus, and then you build up resistance, but it cannot replicate since it has no DNA. So you can't get the flu from the flu vaccine. Many people do, however, have reactions to other things in the vaccine - I know they use eggs and other liquids to make it easier to inject - and even if you're not usually allergic to these things you can have allergic reactions to the shot that sometimes look like a mild case of the flu.

Hi everyone,

Thankx for your kind replys :)

He is doing much better now, although still in the antibiotics he is getting much better..

Although we have come to another stumbling block, I dont know if its his age or his breed or just because he is being a puppy but he wont stop snapping and biting at lots of things, mostly my trouser legs and if im on the floor he will go for my arms and my hands so Im worried its something either Ive done or something I cant get him out of..

Anyone got any advice, he is a collie/kelpie cross and is just over 11 weeks old now.

Thank you!

The nipping is a normal puppy thing... most puppies play like that, nipping at basically anything that moves.

When you're sitting on the floor and he's biting at your hands, a good thing to do is to just get up and walk away. You don't have to tell him anything or give him any "corrections," he'll associate that as soon as his teeth hit your skin the game ends, which is not fun. It will take a long time before he gets the hang of it, you'll have to have a lot of patience, but this is one of those "fun" things that comes with raising a puppy!

When my puppy starts nipping at me, yes like you said, usually at my trousers, I will tand up and tell him that it is "ouch! Do that again and Mommy is gone." When he do it again which he usually does, I will repeat " Mommy ouch!, Mommy gone.." Then I leave the room. It took a while but he hasn't done it for a good while now...hopefully he never will but he knows where he stands with me.

I wouldn't give him a warning, I don't accept even one nip. And I don't think it's necessary to tell him anything while you leave.
My pup is 5 months old last June 22 and doesn't nip anymore. When I said what I said, it was because it was what I did. He soon caught up with what I mean...please do not knock me back for what I did to my little boy. It may not work for your dog/s but it did for me. I don't tell my little boy anything while I leave, I told him what was going to happen if he did it again. It took a few days for him to understand the consequences but he soon knew what to expect. If he wants his gums/teeth brush he just get his toothbrush and hand it to us. Then we know he wants his gums massaged too. And that is not the same as mouthing. He is teething at the moment...

Thanks for your reply. I hope you all have a good day.
