Waking up this morning after returning home late last night it became obvious that someone had tried to get into the house whilst I was out with Bonnie, from a first floor balcony. Anyhow, no entry was gained and nothing was missing from outside.
Strangely, in the garden and on the balcony this morning I noticed some strange seed like pellets, and wondered if there was any connection with there obviously being a dog in the house (signs, day kennel in the yard) and the attempted break-in, as you do hear about dogs being poisoned.
Bonnie hadn't eaten her morning food, which I thought was strange. She was already outside and no more than ten minutes after I spotted those pellets Bonnie started behaving very strangely, kind of alternating between a sit and stand and struggling very hard to make herself sick, like I've never seen. She was then terribly ill, twice, then became dopey and had an obviously trembling tummy. Very scary for a normally healthy, bouncy, never sick dog
Suspecting the worst she was rushed her to our local vet - who was brilliant, clearing the decks, and having three staff attend to her immediately. She was sick a further 3 or 4 times, put on a drip, sedated and eventually given a charcoal like fluid, and although initally slow and clumsy, now seems OK.
Apparently the seed-like pellets (I took some to show) were poisonous according to the vet, although I don't know if she actually ate any or if this was the cause. It could have been an unlucky coincidence (attempted break-in, strange pellets and awfully sick dog) or something else... but something made Bonnie very unwell.... and better safe than sorry.
As she's responded well she's been allowed home to rest and given a special medicated food which she is to be offered tonight, and we go back tomorrow, hopefully for an all clear.
