Waking up this morning after returning home late last night it became obvious that someone had tried to get into the house whilst I was out with Bonnie, from a first floor balcony. Anyhow, no entry was gained and nothing was missing from outside.

Strangely, in the garden and on the balcony this morning I noticed some strange seed like pellets, and wondered if there was any connection with there obviously being a dog in the house (signs, day kennel in the yard) and the attempted break-in, as you do hear about dogs being poisoned.

Bonnie hadn't eaten her morning food, which I thought was strange. She was already outside and no more than ten minutes after I spotted those pellets Bonnie started behaving very strangely, kind of alternating between a sit and stand and struggling very hard to make herself sick, like I've never seen. She was then terribly ill, twice, then became dopey and had an obviously trembling tummy. Very scary for a normally healthy, bouncy, never sick dog :(

Suspecting the worst she was rushed her to our local vet - who was brilliant, clearing the decks, and having three staff attend to her immediately. She was sick a further 3 or 4 times, put on a drip, sedated and eventually given a charcoal like fluid, and although initally slow and clumsy, now seems OK.

Apparently the seed-like pellets (I took some to show) were poisonous according to the vet, although I don't know if she actually ate any or if this was the cause. It could have been an unlucky coincidence (attempted break-in, strange pellets and awfully sick dog) or something else... but something made Bonnie very unwell.... and better safe than sorry.

As she's responded well she's been allowed home to rest and given a special medicated food which she is to be offered tonight, and we go back tomorrow, hopefully for an all clear.

I'm so sorry to hear what happened to Bonnie. I'm glad you were able to get to the vet and get treatment right away.

Wow, it doesn't sound like things are getting any better by you with the breakins. To think someone is now possibly trying to poison your dog to get entry into your house. I just don't think I'd feel very comfortable there.

I am so happy that Bonnie is going to be OK! What a scary time for you between both of the events! I would definitely report it to the authorities.

Thank you all for the thoughts.

Well, after a restless night .. for me .. today's news after returning to the vet is that Bonnie is on the mend... although a blood test has revealed problem readings for her kidney.

You wouldn't know it to see her though, although she's a bit slow and sleepy (no doubt as a result of yesterday's procedure) she's starting to get her bounce back a little.

There's a weeks special food and medication before next check-up now, and I've been advised to add "kidney-friendly" veg to her food - things like leek, asparagus... as well as no treats and trying to get her to drink a lot.

If anyone can recommend anything further in terms of "kidney friendly" food/veg I'd be grateful. I'm having to use web cafe's to post as I'm not on-line at home but I will be checking back...

Yay!

After a week or so of a sluggish, rather sorry looking Bonnie recovering, as of yesterday she's got her bounce back. Still not 100% but starting to spend more time awake and being a lot more energetic and playful than she has been since the incident, very nearly back to her old self. Vet very pleased and winding back the medicine... thank goodness!

Thank goodness - poor Bonnie - I'm so glad things seem okay and she is recovering. That is awful that she might have been poisoned - do they know what the pellets were? Have there been a spate of break-ins around you? We had that last spring and I made sure Misha was sleeping in the bedrooms, just in case, but I'm always scared someone will throw some meat over the wall to try and poison her - we don't leave her in the garden when we go out anymore. ~Give Bonnie a big scratch and hug from us.

The vet said that the pellets were some kind of very toxic seed -- and maybe the would-be burgulars had pushed some into some meat. No spate of burgularies here - thank goodness - just the odd passing opportunist I think...
Anyway - we always check the outside of the house in the morning just in case as Bonnie is let out - and keep a regular check when she's in the garden. She usually comes out whenever we do :) or stays inside....

Phew - that's good it looks like a one off, it's not a nice feeling when you know burgulars are hanging around. And if we ever see pellets turn up outside I'll be on instant alert.

Thank goodness Bonnie is A-ok!!!!!!! How scary that some people in this world would be so cruel.

I'm always on the lookout for anything odd in the yard...sometimes the doggies will go sniff on something together, and I bee line it over there to see what it is.

I'm really happy for you that Bonnie is ok! Merry Early Christmas for you!

I am very sorry to hear that, and am also very happy to hear your dog is recovered. I am scared for my dogs so i am always outside with them, I keep them in a Kennel inside my house when I have to go anywhere, is your dog kennel outside or in? if outside, maybe since this happened you should put it inside? Do you think Bonnie, may have scared off the burglars? I had a dog who i had just taken into my home from the street who protected my house from a robbery, the window was broken, but nothing taken because of my dog. Well, glad to know nothing was taken, and especially your dog is in good health now!! HAPPY HOLIDAYS!!!!
