Has anyone had experience with roundworm? I brought home a Japanese Chin a little over a week. I got her from a reputabale breeder health and gentetic testing etc... Anyway I felt Abigail was not adjusting well, not eating, just laying around acting depressed. The vet found an infestation of roundworm. Vet said she was probably imune to the wormer breeder gave her, so gave her different brand. That was friday, and I don't see any improvement. Is this normal? The vet doesn't want to see her again til thursday. She is drinking plenty of water, but no appetite at all. I use a syringe to force feed her a mixture of baby food chicken and rice cereal. She has not had poopie since saturday. I figured not getting enough to eat, so I'm feeding her every 2 hrs. (as of today). Like they say with human infants, if nothing is coming out, not enougth going in. Can anyone give me advice or encouragment on what to do? Poor Abby just lays around - she is only 2 1/2 lbs. Thanks Debbie

I would call your vet ASAP. Tell him exactly what is going on. On a puppy that little, they can go downhill quickly if they aren't retaining enough nutrition. Give him a call. He will probably want you to bring her in sooner. If not, I would search quickly for another vet.

How old is she ??? There's no excuse for ANY breeder selling a puppy with worms. !!! My females were always tested before breeding and the pups 2 times before going home. I've never had worms within my own breeding.

What can I do for her tonight? Should I keep up on the feedings? She is 8 1/2 wks. My vet looked over the contract, and said everything looked good. Of course I'm attached, and don't want to trade her for another dog. We do not have emergency hours, I live in very rural oklahoma. Should i try feeding her canned dog food? I've also heard of peanut butter. I just feel so helpless. I'm also giving her cultured yogurt because of the antibiotic she is on. Thanks again.

YEAH! I'm so excited Abby is eating dog food. I just gave her meds and yogurt that dr. prescribed. I put a spoonful of wet dog food by her water, and she is eating every bit of it.

For a dog that size 8 week is still kind of early to be away from mom, but not horribly so. If she's eating wet food, let her have it, and then slowly start to introduce kibble in if you want. I know some people only feed wet food, with a few supplements. Though she still may be adjusting and some anitbiotics can upset little tummies and she just didn't feel like eating quite yet. Keep an eye on her and her eliminations and keep us posted!

Thanks for the replys. I've had labs for 20 yrs, and never had worm problems. I really did my homework on this dog/breeder too. From the info I've looked up the mother probably had the worms. I have all the paperwork from the breeder, that Abby had been wormed every 2 weeks. I guess you just never know. Thanks again.

Hi Debbie,

When we got our pup he was only 8 weeks! We found that adding some water to his dry kibble (Canidae) and letting it sit for a few minutes made it much more palatable to him and softer for his sore gums.

I'm glad things are looking up for you and your baby .!!! I figure she must have been just a little over #1 when you got her !!! Lord, that's the size mine were whelped !! I'm not faulting you , but why do breeders not make sure their b*tches are in top shape before breeding !! There are no excuses for puppies with worms !! Plus, even though I could have medicated my pups on my own... I always took the whole litter to the vets. Was a zoo with 13 Golden babies ( only once - thank God ) , but if I brought them into the world , by God it was my place to see they got the best man could give !

Herschel ...we posted at the same time and I agree....when I sent my pups home at that age... I always sent about a weeks supply of their kibble ... I put it through a coarse grinder and suggested that they add a little of the regular each day ... always moistened with water. Adding a little cottage cheese and or hard boiled egg.... These still are babies...

Abby is eating this morning, but still lethargic. I'm waiting to call the vet this am to make sure everything is normal. She seems to be coughing today. I know what you mean about responsible breeding. I have a Boston Ter. accidently got preg. We didn't spay her because she is high risk for anest. I kept close eye on her. Anyway she is house dog, so i put her in kennel which is in my fenced back yard, and a dog dug under in 15 mins. UGH. I kept those pups till they were 12 wks old. I was lucky in that close friends took the pups. I probably would of kept them all if I didn't know the homes.
