Should I suggest she turn her dogs into rescue?

Because I'm between leases, I've been living with my mother for a couple months. She has two chihuahuas who are more or less her house decorations. She bought them a couple years ago when she was mentally pretty bad off. They're fed and given water and if something serious happened she would take them in, but she doesn't keep them up to date on their vaccines, trim their nails, etc. I wouldn't say they're being really neglected, but I don't know if looking from my point of view, it warrants suggesting talking to some chihuahua rescue people or if I should just deal with being the only person to take them to the vet and do anything that isn't the bare minimum. She likes the dogs but I don't think she would be terribly devastated to lose them. I wouldn't burden a rescue with them to foster, but am I just being judgmental or is this worthy of bringing up?

I think most 'house pet' dogs get that... They haven't got it too bad. Just not what we would do.

In my job with kids, we often have to step back and consider what is 'good enough' care.

Is their care good enough?

That is different to asking 'is it what I would do'.

I suppose it's "good enough", just tough for me to watch. They don't get a whole lot of attention, but as long as around, I won't let them get bad off. They got kennel cough this week, for example, and she had no intention of doing anything even though they were clearly pretty bad off because "the vets always trick you into stuff they'd be fine without" Sigh. I know minor kennel cough is usually fine but they needed to go to the vet. I at least got their nails trimmed back enough the one with the bad patellas is walking better.

It's hard... Some people want dogs for different reasons. We aren't always going to agree with all of them....

It's really up to you though at the end of the day.
