Hi there

I am new to this forum and I am trying to decide on my next dog. I have a three year old cavalier king Charles and an 17 year old dachshund cross. When our old girl passes I would like to get another dog as a companion to our cavalier and because I like having two dogs. I work part time over four days and have three children aged 6, 10 and 12. I can exercise 30-45 min morning and night and some training. I would like to do obedience as a hobby. Would a rough collie suit us? We are also looking at minature poodles. I would like a dog that I can train to be more reliable off lead than my cavalier who will go to the "zone" and chase anything that passes by.

Thank you for your help

It sounds like a collie might work really well for you. They tend to be great kid dogs, good with other dogs, good housedogs and 35-45 minutes exercise twice a day plus training would be fine for most IME. The Roughs do have higher grooming needs but less than a Poodle.

Check out the Collie Club of America's online guide to Collies as family dogs:

Thanks for the reply. I wasn't sure if that was enough exercise (although I know it depends on the dog). Cheers
