please pray for those affected by a shooting that just took place at my work. I work at a local hospital. Apparently some guy came into the icu department and open fired on his own family. Near as I can tell from the details released so far... no staff have been injured. There has been at least one fatality and one critically injured as well as others wounded. This had to be so traumatic for everyone there. I can't imagine the fear the other patients and families as well as all the hospital staff felt when that guy started shooting. Those images are libel to be sketched in their brain forever. Such a tragedy. I know it could have been a whole lot worse... but it's still awful. I'm so glad I wasn't at work tonight.

OMG! Yet another crazy person. My thoughts are with the family and all the people who were there. You were indeed lucky to not have been. I'm so sorry.

Just recently...I think a few days ago, someone shot and killed a park ranger who put up road blocks to keep him from driving through, into the park because she saw he had a lot of guns...they're not allowed there. He shot and killed her. She had two kids...family. So sad. Then later, they found him dead, apparently from exposure and he was in a creek or something. I heard this second hand so don't know all the details. He was some Iraq war vet who completely lost his marbles I guess.

I'm sure sorry about the incident at the hospital. It will definitely leave a mark for a long time. It will be strange for you when you go back to work. I hope it won't be too dismal a place for too long. My heart goes out to all involved. Very, very sad.

they're still withholding a lot of the information. But I've heard pretty much the bulk of what happened, just not what the motivation was. One of our nurse practitioners who works in the nicu has a sister that works in the adult ICU. Apparently.... there was this patient in the ICU that had some visitors last night during visiting hours. This guy who is the husband and son in law to two of the visitors comes in with a gun and open fires on them over some sort of domestic dispute. One of the victims was pronounced dead at the scene and the other was air lifted out of the situation to another hospital. At that point they weren't sure if the shooter was still in the hospital somewhere.

The second one that had been critically shot and airlifted had died shortly after arriving at the other hospital which was literally just a few minute flight from us. Not sure if others were wounded... there is conflicting stories. All I know is that none of the hospital staff were supposedly caught in the crossfire. This was such a tragedy... I'm still so shocked that it even happened. Nothing like this has ever happened at our hospital, not ever. As bad as it was, it could have been so much worse. Thank God none of the other patients were injured... and thank God the spark from the bullets didn't ignite an explosion from all the oxygen supplies located everywhere around the shooting. I have to work tonight, it's going to be such an odd feeling to go in to a place where u know something so terrible happened :( The shooter ended up turning himself in shortly after he opened fired on his family. At least that's a relief to know he's in custody. They haven't released any names or any further info the last I heard.

It's just awful! I'm glad he's under lock and key so he can't go on another rampage. What the heck is wrong with people? It's so sad that people had to lose their lives because of some freakin' nut job. So sad.

i know.... it's absolutely crazy to think someone would do such a thing. I am interested in finding out what transpired to cause this lunatic to open fire in a hospital and kill his own family members.

now the news is "questioning" the safety of our hospital. That's just what the community needs to hear. This was something that could have happened ANYWHERE. The hospital is a public place. People come and go.... it's not like we frisk them as they come in. If they're going to say our hospital isn't safe, they may as well say all the local public restaurants and stores and where ever else the public is allowed to enter through the doors freely isn't safe either. It's sad this whole thing happened. It just irks me they're trying to make the hospital look like it's an unsafe place to go.

That's horrible my thoughts and prayers are with those people.

It sucks about the media too. They are huge fear mongers and do it for ratings. I hope people *though I know not everyone is* realize this could happen anywhere and not just the hospital.

They were running that on the Knoxville news, Nancy, although not as sensationally or questioning the safety of the hospital.

It could have happened anywhere, at any time, regardless of "safety measures." Acts of chaos are just that, and they don't fit into any schematics and there is no way to ensure that they will never happen, short of living in a totalitarian, drugged-into-stupor society.

You left out the TSA. Maybe we need them in all places of business to frisk all citizens...you know...to keep us "safe."

i got more details when i went to work last night. this guy was in his 50's and was estranged from his wife. The estranged wife and her mother were visiting a family member in the icu. the estranged husband shows up and there is a domestic dispute and he is asked to leave. The estranged wife and her mother are now waiting in the icu waiting area.... not sure if visiting hours were just over or they were getting coffee or whatever. But the wife was in one seat, there was a stranger in the next seat to her and the mother to the wife was in the next seat to the stranger. The husband goes out to his vehicle and grabs his gun and comes back in the hospital to the icu waiting area. He literally pulled out the gun and pointed it at his wife and shot her and then his mother in law and shot her (or vise versa on the order) with this poor stranger literally sitting elbow to elbow between both of these women. Can you imagine the horror that person must have felt to think they were going to die too. Gosh, I can't even imagine.

Then because no one knew where he went after he left the icu, that's when the hospital went on lock down and all the troops were called in to sweep the hospital room by room. There were people who had just had surgery that day that literally got out of their hospital beds and were hiding in their closets. I never did hear why he did it.
