My 1 1/2 yr old Shih Poo has recurring diarrhea.

We put her on EVO Red Meat and she was doing great but about once a month she would have diarrhea for about three days.

The vet had us change to a bland diet and she'll do fine on that but she seems sooo hungry when she's on that. Like it doesn't fill her.

Whenever we introduce any other food to her diet, she would get green or loose stool again.

Right now we are on a totally bland diet. Chicken and rice only. She was doing okay.

I gave her some Corn Flakes because I was in the kitchen and she's so darn cute and she ended up with diarrhea again.

The diarrhea normally only lasts for a couple of days and then she just has softer poo usually green in color.

What does green poo mean? Is that bad?

I would like her on a normal diet but I just can't seem to find anything but white rice and chicken.

Is there more of a health concern than diet here?

I suggest taking your shih tzu mix to a vet. There may be something other than diet going on.

If she started up again after the corn flakes, I would venture to guess that she should not have any corn in her diet. Also, remember that just because your dog is cute doesn't mean it's a good idea to compromise her health. Keep her on her diet the she is supposed to be on. some dogs can handle extras just fine. but obviously this isn't one of those dogs.

What tests did your vet do, what did he check her for before he ordered her onto a bland diet?

If I were to take one of my dogs into the vet with green diarrhea, she would check for medical things before ordering a different diet............this is why I ask.

In my experience, green poo (is it also gelatinous-ish?) means that nutrients aren't being absorbed properly by the body. It would mean an allergy, or an intolerance... you've been the vet, the vet should know what green poo means for sure. Consistency is as important as colour in terms of diagnosing.

I'd say go back to the vet, explain these problems to them, and see what they say. Good luck.

This seems to have been happening since your mix was 14 weeks old (from your previous posts). It's time for you to

1.) Insist that the vet run some tests to figure out if it's just the food or if there is something else or

2.) Get a new vet who will run the proper tests.

Good luck and I hope you can get it under control.

Did your pup happen to have parvo as a pup? I know some dogs that have always had intestinal issues after surviving parvo and frequent poo of many colors is one of the things I see a lot. Usually happens over food changes or stress.

Yes, this has been going on since she was a pup. I don't think she's gone a full month without going through this for a few days. In my ignorance I had almost considered this was some sort of female cycle thing.

I've gone through two vets. Both have checked the stool for parasites and both said it was clean and that it is stress related.

I've been concerned about food allergy as well. Only if that were true it would seem like it wouldn't be so cyclical. I would think the issue would follow the food pretty quickly.

She was never diagnosed with Parvo. She's had frequent visits to the vet and they've given her the thumbs up for all of her shots etc.

I'll take another stool sample over tomorrow and see about another appointment.

The vets all seem to say the same thing. If the diarrhea doesn't last for more than a couple of days at a time and she doesn't act down or lethargic, she's fine.

She is a very happy and active dog.

And yes her stool often has that gelatinous consistency.

Thanks for the responses.
