My Shih Tzu has begun vomitting recently a clear viscous liquid. It seems to be on our days off more than finding it when we come home. I dunno if its is for attention or there is something wrong. Occasionally he eats too fast and throws up, but he eats that. This he just leaves for you to find often by stepping in it (yuk) Should I be taking him to the vet and be concerned?

Speaking of vets...anyone know of a good one in GTA? I have called a few places about getting Jackson fixed and two have said to wait until he lifts his leg to pee at least 75 % of the time...he is 8 months old and has never lifted his leg. Will he ever or can we get him neutered before this? Also Jack has alot of baby teeth still in his lower jaw that have not fallen out and his permanent teeth have come in as well...he looks pretty goofy with such a mouthful of teeth. Do they need to pulled out?

Alrighty - definately get your pup to the vet to get his baby teeth pulled.

They SHOULD have dropped out already, so they must be pulled or he'll have major problems.

I know a few male dogs that STILL do not lift their leg to go to the washroom - so not sure what those vets are thinking. Definately stay away from them if THAT is their suggestion though.

He can be fixed now if you'd like. 8 months is a good age for a male to be fixed anyways. Our Sheltie male was nuetered when he was approx. 9 months old. We would have done it sooner, but we had to get our breeder to evaluate him incase he would be used for breeding etc.

As for throwing up - I'd get your pup to the vet just in case.

I fostered a Shih Tzu that yacked up a similar sounding substance. It turns out she had a problem with the shortness of the pallet in the back of her throat because of the smooshed face. There wasn't anything we could do besides restrict excersize after drinking, but I think you should talk to your vet and make sure it isn't something more serious ;)
I agree with Summer as well ;)

thank you...I think he is ready to be neutered at 8 months. The vet Jackson saw in VA told me that he has very narrow nasal passages because of the smooshed in face, and may require surgery to fix it. I think it may cause him to vomit this liquid as well. He does have problems breathing while he eats and drinks. This is always alarming, he sounds like he is choking! We have to remind him to slow down...I need to find a good vet in my area so I can rest easier knowing what to do about all these things...

I perosnally know of vets that neuter both kittens and pups, as early as 6-8 weeks in some states. That stuff about them needing to lift their leg first, is crap. They tell me that the earlier you get dogs fixed the better. Prevents alot of cancers, plus it can help avoid any leg lifting which most people like.

M last dog vomited like that and it turned out that her pancrease was failiing. At first they thought she had colitis. So yes I would get her to a vet, ASAP! And not mess around. Especially if it is an ongoing problem. Best of luck. Let us know how it turns out!

They wanted to fix Lizzie at 5 weeks old at the shelter!!!!! We said NO we will wait and have our vet do it. I agree with everyone else you should find a vet ASAP. Do have friends in your area that have dogs ask them what vet they use.

My Shih-Tzus have done this after drinking and play but would have vet check anyway. As for teeth get to vet. As to nutur get it done before he hikes leg. Males still tend to mark territory if let go to long before nutur and the ones I get done as pups never have and squat to go all their life. Makes it better for me anyway.

Ah another Shih Tzu owner and you are much closer to me :D

Charlie will throw up like you are saying sometimes when he drinks his water to fast.

The vet Jackson saw in VA told me that he has very narrow nasal passages because of the smooshed in face, and may require surgery to fix it.
As for this issue above , that is what all vets say. I got all worried about the surgery, until I bought a Shih Tzu book that told me to tell my vet that the wheezing was normal.

So it sounds like your dog is still making wheezing noises at this age? Its called a reverse sneeze and is very normal in shih tzus and pugs. I was told they normally grow out of it by 1 year old and hardly ever require surgery. Please please do not let any vet talk you into surgery before making sure they fully understand this breed and you get a second opinion.

charlie is over 8 months and only 7 1/2 pounds and we have no issues with this anymore.

Oh! It made me sooooo happy to read this post...especially after reading the one about colitus!!! (Big sigh) I am gonna still get him to a vet soon! He is gonna be fixed wether they like it or not. It will make me happier! Sounds like Jackson and Charlie are very close in age and size...what colour is Charlie?
