Me and my family have decided to get another dog and one of my family's friend's dog has just had puppies, the pups are "Shih-poos". So I was thinking that maybe we would get a Shih-poo. But I was wondering if a Shih-poo is an actual breed, I have heard people say it is a breed while other people say it isn't.
I have also researched on Shih-poos for quite awhile but I have realized that there is hardly any sites with info on Shih-poos, so does anyone have any good sites on Shih-poos?

Thanks ;)

Shih-poo is not a breed. It's a 'designer dog.'
Run, don't walk, RUN away from anyone who is selling these mixes.

Basically what PWC said. If you're interested, it's a cross between a shih tzu and a poodle.

If for some reason you want one, there are tons of them in shelters, and other similar toy mixes, that were bought by people from irresponsible breeders on a whim and then ditched there. You can probably find a really sweet, cute little dog secondhand :D

You're welcome :)

If you really want a designer breed, there are many waiting in shelters and rescue waiting for a forever home. In fact, here are some currently looking for homes. :)

Coming from someone who currently owns a pomeranian/poodle mix, 'designer breeds' can have some behavior/temperment/physical problems because the people/places who are producing them are in it purely for the money. But if you go through rescue they should be able to tell you all about the dog and if it has any problems, and you can get a dog that will fit your needs.

Hope that helped a little.

It's not a breed so there really is no info on them since there is no standard look or temperament for the breed, it makes getting one a real gamble, plus why buy that mix from a breeder when you can get the exact same quality dog from a shelter (like this one: http://www.petfinder.com/petnote/displaypet.cgi?petid=10978116 plus many Shih-Tzus and Many poodles ). Unfortunately people keep giving them these stupid names to make them sound like a breed and many people are falling for it. It's just like if I called my Lab/Shar pei/great Dane mix (from a shelter) a "Great Sharador" and started breeding the mixes for thousands of $$ when there are millions sitting in shelters. if you want a dog from a breeder, we can help you find one (PLEASE let us, we know what to look for!) but if you don't have a breed in mind check out a shelter or rescue dog and save a life. www.petfinder.com has listings of tons of dogs needing homes.

Well I went to the 2 Shelters near me.
I didn't really find any ones that kinda just stood out, but then near the back of the second shelter I went, there was this black and white mutt, with shaggy fur and he was about 3 feet tall. He was just sitting down at the kennel door and when I kinda stopped by at his kennel he started wagging his tail like crazy. I felt so sad for him, so I went over to the shelter worker and I asked about that dog and she told when he had come, how old he was and just the basic info about him. So finally I decided that he was the one. So I asked the Shelter worker if I could meet him and if he could come home with me but the shelter worker said that he already had a home and he was leaving in two days:( so I was really sad but then I thought at least he's going to a home.
So I guess I'll keep on continuing my search:)

Good luck. I'm so happy that you've decided to take some of the advice given to you. Chazzers are so amazing aren't they? Please don't ever hesitate to ask anyone on here for advice. We're here to help. Best of luck to you on your dog search. I can't wait to see pics when you bring one home.

Do you have an idea what you want in a dog as far as temperment, etc? Knowing what you really want in a dog will help a lot in your search to find the right dog for you.

The right dog will find you . . . perhaps when you aren't expecting it!

And when he or she does, we want pics!

Thanks everyone!

I'm thinking of maybe fostering one see how it goes, since I have never gotten an animal from a sheler(only breeders), but I know for sure I want a dog from a shelter.

If there is a certain breed you really like, there are a lot of breed specific rescues around as well :)
