So Emma is housetrained. The problem is she goes to the door and just stands there, waiting to be left out. If I happen not to be waiting at the door to let he out, she wil wait for a few min, then go somewere in the house. I am working on telling her to bark before I will let her out (she will bark on command). It seems to be working, but what about when I take her to my parents place? Is there like a bell or something I could teach her to use? One that I could hear upstairs?

You could have a small door bell installed to her level so you can teach her to push it so that you can hear indoors that she wants to go out ;)

Or you could do some posative reinforcement her too get her to bark for attention if when to go out or maybe use a command like "toilet" or "wee-wee" and relate that to the action that you want her too do.

Just a suggestion :)

I have never had any dog that would bark to go out.

I WATCH my dogs. If they go to the door, I go let them out.

I have one dog who will run her nails across the door if she needs out, but I have to watch the other 2.

reddobe has the right idea. There are a lot of people that are into the bell training and that is a great way to go too. Anything that you want to happen will work as long as you reinforce it prior to going out and reward it by letting the dog out. The great thing is that Emma understands what is expected there is just one small element missing. Great job so far.

If she can bark on command why not just ask her to bark when she is standing there waiting to go out? Seems like the same idea as bell training but with the end effect that you are looking for.
