I found a puppy hidding behind one of the bushes on my back yard, he is probably a shar pei/ labrador mix as most people who've met him said so. I wonder what type of temperament I can expect him to have, and what types of health issues will he likely have, if any. Also, how big will he be at full grown?

He's absolutely a doll right now. He is VERY calm in comparison to Missy & Mocha, he lets me pet him while he eats, and touch his food without any problems. He doesn't seem to be a big barker even though he has been barked at & harrassed by Missy & Mocha :). He's very friendly with people and dogs alike. Does a calm puppy always turn out to be a calm dog, or their personality will change as they grow up?

I'm still debating whether we're fitted to be his owner, or he'd be better off with someone else, as we already have two small dogs, will have a baby soon, and are both working fultime.

    Thanks.

PS: I'll send some of his pics later tonite.

Just as with any other mix you can't know how big he'll be. He could have been bred with a large (100 lb) Lab and a 60 lb Shar Pei. You could end up with a 40 lb (taking after a smaller Shar Pei) up to 100 lb (taking after a very large Lab). You could have the temperament of either or a combination of both. You will have the hereditary problems of both (hip dysplasia, entropion, luxation, cherry eye, ear infections, stenotic nares, tight lips, malocclusion, hypothyrooidism, demodectic mange, oleosa, hot spots, skin odor, etc.) Most of those are related to the Shar Pei.
Basically, you've got a mix that could be like the Shar Pei - Regal, alert, intelligent, dignified, lordly, scowling, sober and snobbish essentially independent and somewhat standoffish with strangers, but extreme in his devotion to his family. The Shar-Pei stands firmly on the ground with a calm, confident stature....OR the Labrador - kindly, outgoing, tractable nature; eager to please and non-aggressive towards man or animal. The Labrador has much that appeals to people; his gentle ways, intelligence and adaptability make him an ideal dog.

There are so many ways your dog could turn out. What if he was the product of an agressive Shar Pei and a shy Lab? Then you've really got issues if he takes after his parents. Do you know where this dog came from? Why someone dropped it off?

    Please post pics soon. :)

although do do your research to try and find his owner first

there could be someone out there who is missing him very much

just call up shelters, get him scanned for a chip, etc

I have no ideas how & when it got to my yard. M&M started barking last Thursday at one of those bushes in my backyard (we have a 29,000 sf back yard, so I almost never get to the end of it), but I thought it was probably a stray cat or a mouse or something, so I didn't check. When their barkings continued, on Friday afternoon, I checked & found a dog!!

He was really shy at first. It took me three meals to lure him out of his hidding place. He didn't let me touch him at first. I had to sit still & let him sniff at me for a while, then he slowly allowed me to touch him. Now all he wants to do is to be touched. He follows me around like I've had him forever, and is very attached to me. Is it odd that he only craves for my attention, but doesn't seem to be interested in my husband at all?

Since I found him, I've posted his pictures around in the neighborhood, placed an ads in the local newspaper (missing pet section) - but it has been almost 5 days and no ones has claimed him yet :(

He was either dumped off (how old is he?), escaped from his home or is very, very lost and far from home.
Try putting posters up in a 25 - 50 mile radius of your home. Maybe someone moved and the pup escaped in the process. Hopefully someone will claim him soon.
It's not odd that he's attached to you. You found him, fed him, saved him from those barking dogs *M&M :)* and didn't hurt him when he was scared. You were the first nice person he'd probably seen since being lost/abandoned.

OMG! He is ADORABLE! You have to keep him and love him forever :) How do you know his next home will be as good as yours. Sometimes the ones that find YOU are the dogs that turn out to be the best dog you ever owned! Did I make you feel guilty yet  I couldn't turn him away but I'm a BIG SUCKER:D ! Are you going to take him to the vet?

Green eyes and a dudley nose, aw... I can see why you think he's at least part Sharpei (I was curious about that, before the photos).

Judging from those paws, he's going to be a big dog - at least 50lbs. I'd consider getting an evaluation on his temperament (vet school's give good reccomendations, or you could look for someone through a good vet, shelter, etc.) He looks very lovable, but he may not be right for a busy household that's shortly going to include two other dogs and a baby (and eventually, a little kid and his/her friends). Sharpei's are not usually famous for being tolerant, long-suffering dogs. Labs are famous for that trait, but they are also a little more territorial than people credit them for, and the dog looks more Sharpei than lab, anyway. I'd give him a chance, but I'd want a good expert opinion that he's going to be okay with kids.

I'll bring him to the vet to have him scaned for microchip this Saturday. I haven't called any shelters yet (didn't think of it until now) - but I will.

If I can't keep him, I want to either return him to his rightful owner, or give him to someone who can provide better care for him than I :)

He looks like pure Shar Pei to me. If there is anything else mixed in it isn't to obvious. I hope someone claims him or you find him a good home soon. He looks so sweet. :)

He is so freakin cute! Most definately a mix but still cute.

My grandparents are really into shar peis and have three

Peis are usually very stuck up. its like they feel embaressed if you catch them chasing their tail. they are one of the easiest dogs to potty train because other than the drool they love to be clean.

A lot of them have seroiues skin issues. Many have behavior issues also. If only they were more popular I swear they would be banned same as pits and chows are other places. My grandparents latest rescue is horrible and honestly I would have put her down a long time ago. She gets better and then she is right back to growling biting crazy dog. But they won't give up on her, even though she tried to bite my calf last saturday:rolleyes: -But anyway- I will have one someday-lucy is exactly what a shar pei should be and if I cna find one jsut like her its mine:p

So they need lots and lots of socialization. I have heard some get odd attachments and guard objects but I've never really seen that. Lu lu does go nuts if soemone touches the door but I think thats jsut her people coming over issue and not really with the door. Also start it on a good food now so hopeuflly skin is less of a issue later. don't over bathe but also make sure the folds are clean and dry.

And he looks younger so I doubt anyone in your household would be an issue with the dog. they attach onto the members of the family and the last thing they would do is turn on them. the problem is many don't tolerate outside people. the first pei my grandparents had was horrible with strangers but I could get down and wrestle with her all day. I've never heard of one turning on the family(I'm sure its happened).

What a cutie! Such an irresistable face!:)

The only experience I have had with a shar pei is one my brother had years ago. He was wonderful with his 3 young sons. They did end up having problems though as his boys got older and started having friends come over to the house. Their dog would not accept visitors that it hadn't known since he was a puppy. Whenever other company came over the dog had to be closed off in one of the bedrooms for safety sake. They had to be extremely vigilant and it was difficult because boys being boys they'd sometimes forget to come in alone 1st to secure the dog before bringing their friends in. While they had many close calls luckily they were always able to avoid any bites.

I'm not so sure he's a mixed breed...he doesn't really have any labrador like characteristics.

I bet he's someone's lost puppy. Since it's likely he's a pure bred, (and also that he's gorgeous) you should definately try to find his parents.

I know that if anyone found Orchid wondering around and decided to keep her I'd be devestated.

    Maybe he's microchipped...

Anyway, I know he's cute, and I'm sorry to "rain on the parade" but yeah, definately try to find his home before you keep him for your own.

even poorly bred the ears would jsut be tiny folded triangles nad the tail would have a diffrent structure(although it looks horrible on my pics!).

I wouldn't be surprised if someone had it and found out it may have skin issues and dumped it. People do it with the purebreeds they pay hundreds for so if they jsut picked the pup up it wouldn't surprise me.
