All the information I've found dealing with separation anxiety says that the best way to handle it is to leave your dog alone for very short periods of time then gradually increase the amount of time you are gone. We keep our puppy in a crate when we are not home so I'm wondering if the times the puppy is left alone should be done in the crate?

Yes. The crate is one of the most positive places that you can keep your dog. We started Herschel off in the crate, then when he could control his bladder we gave him more and more free space.

Over time, we learned that he is much more rested and happy if we thoroughly exercise him and then put him in his crate with stuffed toys, a nylabone, and a Kong with peanut butter smeared in it.

I agree with Herschel.

Often, like with my case with Hades, dogs who have separation anxiety issues will become destructive when left alone.

To make your coming home a happy one, don't set them up for failure. The crate is a safe, quiet place for your puppy.

A Kong with frozen wet food or yogurt is a great thing to keep them occupied. :)

Good luck
